Update: Suspect Charged With Robberies Near Metra Stops


Lee Mintz, 17, was arrested and charged with five counts of armed robbery for a string of crimes in the 1000 block of East 87th Street near Metra stations between July 19 and July 30, 2009.

Chicago Police have arrested a suspect in a string of robberies near Metra stations on the South Side.

Lee Mintz, 17, of the 8500 block of South Ingleside was arrested Wednesday and charged with five counts of armed robbery for a string of crimes in the 1000 block of East 87th Street between July 19 and July 30, according to a release from police.

Metra Police supplied video surveillance photos of the suspects, and Calumet Area detectives were able to successfully identify Mintz from the photos, according to police.

Tactical units from the South Chicago and Gresham apprehended Mintz, who police said was positively identified by victims. He is scheduled to appear in bond court later Thursday.

Six similar robberies occurred at Metra Electric Line stations between the 83rd and 95th stops on the South Chicago and University Park runs, according to Calumet Area police.

In all six cases, one to three men approached Metra riders and demanded money and personal property. No one was injured in any of the robberies.

Police are continuing the investigation to identify a second offender, according to the release.
