Put Them In: Bike Racks, Bike Paths and Bike Lanes on 79th Street and on King Drive

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel the City of Chicago Bureau of Signs and Markings, Department of Transportation should install all-new bike racks, restore bike paths, and create dedicated painted bike lanes on 79Th Street between State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive between 75Th Street and 87Th Street in both directions to accommodate the ever increasing bike and motorcycle traffic the Chatham community is experiencing in the summertime. Bike paths should be linked together We hope the City Council will pass an ordinance holding drivers liable if they open a car door in the path of an approaching cyclist and injure a cyclist. And we hope the City Council would consider a fine for motorists who park in bike lanes, and apply legal penalties for cyclists who ride recklessly and do not obey traffic signals. Finally, we urge Mayor Daley to create and appoint a newly founded Bicycle Advisory Committee that will work more closely with advocacy groups, that instead of thinking of just serious cyclists, they will be going at it for improving life for everybody.
