Wouldn't it be Great!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel it would be great if Governor Patrick Quinn would authorize the building of a weigh station on the Dan Ryan Expressway to assess tolls to trucks that use I-94 and use that excise tax to fund property tax relief for senior citizens. The national trucking industry has been getting off like bonkers with the free ride they have been getting while passing by Chatham will no toll whatsoever for decades. It is time they pay their way rightfully so that tax revenues so generated would help maintain the roadway as well as making the lives of our senior population a little easier. FYI, the seniors of Crestwood get property taxes paid by their off-track-betting operation in a similar way.

WHAT: The Million Father March 2009 will occur at thousands of schools across America. This year, an estimated 750,000 men from 500 cities are expected to participate. The Million Father March also provides an escort of safety, support, and encouragement to children of all ages on their first day of school. If the first day of school has passed, fathers will get another opportunity to take their children to school on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, National Fathers Take Children to School Day.

Research shows that children whose fathers take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, get better test scores, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. Additionally, children have fewer behavior problems when fathers listen to and talk with them regularly and are active in their educational and social developmental lives. A good father is part of a good parent team and is critical to the academic success of children.

Participants in the Million Father March include fathers, grandfathers, foster fathers, stepfathers, uncles, cousins, big brothers, significant male caregivers and friends of the family. Businesses are asked to give fathers and men 2 hours off that morning to take their children to school. Men will also be encouraged to volunteer at schools throughout the year.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009 is National Fathers Take Children to School Day.
Fathers Across America Must Take their Children to School on this Day
John Hammond, President of 100 Black Men of America, takes his children to school in Atlanta, Georgia, on the first day of school.

In the past two weeks several reports have come out that highlight the importance of the fathers who take an active role in the educational and social development of their children. These reports show us of the irreplaceable value of fathers in their children's lives. The first report is from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana by Brent McBride. This report tells us that when fathers become early involved in their children's educational lives, it makes a tremendous academic difference as the children grow older. The study reports that a father's involvement in the early educational lives of their children mitigates many of the negative factors that occur later in a child's school career.
Additionally, in a study released last week by Brenda Lohman of Iowa State University, it was projected that 25% of low-income children in Chicago, Boston and San Antonio engage in sex between the ages of 11 years old and 16 years old with the average age being 12 years old.
The research also found that children with more involved fathers were less likely to have sex at a young age.
If you missed taking your child to school on the first day, don't miss taking them on Tuesday, September 8, 2009,National Fathers Take Children to School Day. It can change their lives for the better, forever.

Please call 773.285.9600 to participate in this day of action and commitment or email us at blackstar1000@ameritech.net.

This map was created following a news report about a high rate of violence in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. Our aim is to help volunteer-based tutor/mentor programs grow in each high-poverty zip code of the Chicago region by enlisting business, faith community, hospitals and university resources to work with programs in the neighborhoods where they have facilities. This map shows many churches in the area and a major expressway that brings thousands of commuters through the neighborhood every day. All summer, I have volunteered with a great group of kids, teaching them different skills, how to start businesses, how to tap into their talents, and how to stay focused on their dreams. On the following Saturday September 5, 2009 from noon-to 4:00 p.m., those students will be showcasing what they learned all summer at the Violence Prevention and Training Community Fair. You are all invited to attend this great community fair that is focused on bringing a community together to enhance the success of it’s children. Each student class will be running a mini business at the fair, there will be guest speaker Representative Ken Dunkin, Alderman Pat Dowell, and Brenda Matthews a world renowned Poet and Story teller. Community service agencies such as Department of Human Resources will be providing information about the resources they have for community participants, local business will be represented such as Sensual Steps and the Black Bean CafĂ©. Bob Jackson from Cease Fire will be speaking to the community about how to address the violence our children face each day. I have attached a flier, please feel free to distribute to friends, family, and other communities, all are invited. Please come, support an activity that focuses on the future of our children. Be an activist for Change, if you want to know how you can get involved, make a donation, or becomea volunteer/mentor in the fall, give a call 800-520-9946. From: Raynard Subject: Black Activism Examined During March on Washington AnniversaryBlack Activism Examined During March on Washington AnniversaryBy Hazel Trice Edney - NNPA Editor-in-ChiefSource: The Washington Informer.comThis week marks the 46th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Aug. 28, 1963. Nearly a half century since the march that drew more than 200,000 to Washington, D.C., Black activists contend that their commitment remains the same. “I think that some leaders are now reluctant to engage in public struggle because President Barack [Obama] is in the White House. But, I would remind you that a public demonstration for justice would not be a march on the President,” said the Rev. Jesse Jackson, president and CEO of the Chicago-based Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Though public demonstrations by Black activists have been scaled back significantly since Obama’s election, the intense focus on issues is still the same, Jackson said.“In 1963, we were marching for the right to vote. Now we’re marching to the polls by the millions all over the nation. Activism, now, is the election of city councils and state legislatures, Congress and President of the United States,” Jackson said. “When you fight, you fight with the whole armor of God – litigation, legislation, registration, demonstration. All of those are forms of fighting. Even in 1963, we had won the ’54 Supreme Court decision, the ’55 Montgomery bus boycott, and students across the South marched on Selma. Even then, we used litigation, legislation, registration and demonstration. We’ve always used several forms of fighting.” Jackson admits that the current lack of street activism, that had resurged during the eight years of the Bush Administration, may be necessary to make ultimate progress on issues through the first four years of the Obama Administration.Street demonstrations are not only still needed to fight remaining inequities, but to counteract the uprising of White-led right wing activism around the nation in the wake of health care legislation, Jackson said.“The evidence of hostility is shown clearly in the town hall meetings,” he said. “We are still fighting. But we’re winning. The reason why the right wing is acting so hostile is because they are feeling desperate. They lost the White House. We won.” “Our agenda has not changed. It’s just that instead of having an adversary in the White House, we have an ally,” Jackson said.Read the entire article: click here>>> 11. From: Raynard Subject: An Unlikely Duo An unlikely duo: President Obama andSen. Ted Kennedy built strong ties in short time
BY David Saltonstall Source: New York Daily News.com
Somodevilla/GettyPresident Obama and Sen. Kennedy forged a deep bond in a short period of time.
They were hardly the most likely duo: the white, aged and distinctly privileged son of the storied Kennedy clan, and the young, black freshman senator from inner-city Chicago who never really knew his father.
But Sen. Edward Kennedy and President Obama managed in a short time to build a relationship that went beyond the political to the personal, friends and aides said yesterday, and both men benefited in ways large and small.
"I think Ted Kennedy saw a bit of his brother John in Barack Obama - cool under pressure, focused, tough, yet standing for the right things," said Peter Fenn, a Democratic consultant and longtime Kennedy pal. "It was very real."
For Obama, it was an affection that translated into what many see as the single most important endorsement of his campaign in January 2008 - well before it was clear Obama would be the nominee.
With Kennedy's stamp of approval, Obama got instant credibility, to say nothing of the aura of Camelot that Kennedy seemed so eager to bestow.
"Say what you want about the politics of that endorsement," said presidential spokesman Bill Burton yesterday, "the psychological boost it gave to folks on the campaign was amazing."
Kennedy got something, too, that day: a promise that health care reform would be at the top of Obama's legislative agenda if he won - a vow that Obama is still struggling to make real.
But insiders say the relationship really began much earlier, when Obama first got to the Senate and needed to learn the ropes. One of the first calls he made was to Kennedy, who stretched out his hand to the young freshman when many colleagues of lesser seniority did not.
"The President has always said that Sen. Kennedy kept an open door and an open mind," said Tommy Vietor, an assistant White House press secretary.
By the end, the bond had grown into something much deeper.
"I mean this is someone who helped the President pick out his family dog - that's going above and beyond," said Vietor, referring to First Dog Bo, who came from the same breeder that provided Kennedy with his three beloved Portuguese water dogs - Sunny, Splash and Cappy.
It's a friendship that was evident yesterday in Obama's words, but also in the somber, pained expression in which he delivered them.
"Even though we have known this day was coming for some time now, we awaited it with no small amount of dread," said Obama, reading from a small notebook rather than his usual TelePrompTer.
After delivering the statement, Obama went to the beach with his family, and later grabbed some fried seafood in downtown Oak Bluffs for lunch before retreating to his 28-acre compound about 4 p.m. for the remainder of the day.
He's got another speech to write - this one a eulogy, which aides said yesterday he'll deliver at Kennedy's funeral on Saturday.

Do you think the Chicago Public Schools are perpetuating a fraud on our children by pressuring teachers to inflate grades for students who have not learned, let alone mastered, the material in class? Leave your comment on the comment line.

What do you think we should do about the thug element of the younger generation (hoodlums and gang-bangers [black teenagers and young adults from broken homes] and bad-ass kids with little or no parenting--project people from prison), and the derelict homeless men of all ages, milling about and the damage they have done in our community of Chatham? Jobs, Jobs, and more Jobs!...and Business Opportunities and Economic Development, too!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel the time is ripe for all of our community leaders to rise up and ask President Barack Obama, himself, to come as an honored and invited guest to an outdoor dinner party (preferrably in canopied style behind Izola's Restaurant) with Senator Roland W. Burris as honored host, to present face-to-face economic development proposals with federal stimulus funds to create jobs desperately needed, especially for the young people in the neighborhood (and summer jobs with real pay like a $2,000 minimum per month for all 3 months so that teenagers can help out their families, and full-time year-around jobs with real good pay, with a $58,000 mean, for adults who can support their families as well), and to build a community center, a senior citizens center at the vacant lot at 82ND Street and King Drive, and a health and fitness club on the vacant lot that was the former site of Rhodes Theater at 79Th Street and Rhodes Avenue, like Bosse Sports in Boston, and to invite the upscale building of trendy shops and restaurants and tony places for people to dance and relax, like elegant supper clubs, to revitalize the area with a cash infusion of $5-7 billion dollars. Further, a full-fledged South Loop overhaul is necessary to bring Chatham to what it must be, and most importantly, ought to be, and that is equivalent to the current comfortable standard of living enjoyed by the white community in the affluent suburbs. Seniors citizens could stay in their homes with federal support in the form of housing grants, and more importantly, with a City Council ordinance to give them a variance on their property taxes, that they be capped giving them an additional exemption from the rise in real estate values due to a "South Looping" of Chatham. It is high time now for our leaders to get moving, go forward, and as Barack always says "get it done" right away! YES, YOU CAN!!!

Editorial

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, appreciate the viral feedback from the literally thousands of residents through numerous blogs from all over the South Side of Chicago and even from the six collar counties, concerning the commentary on whether Chatham should be South Looped. Some have even proposed being Hyde Parked as more in line with what they have thought Chatham always was. We feel that a South Loop model would be the best for Chatham for two reasons. First, with all the damage done by the thug element of the younger generation (hoodlums and gang-bangers [black teenagers and young adults from broken homes] and bad-ass kids with little or no parenting--project people from prison), and second, the fact that the standard of living achieved by the suburban white community is now, since 1968, rising to be 40 years ahead of the black community, including Chatham, only a full-fledged South Loop overhaul is necessary to bring Chatham to what it must be, and most importantly, ought to be, and that is equivalent to the current comfortable standard of living enjoyed by the white community in the affluent suburban areas since 1980, all over the United States (as Chatham was in the 1950's and 60's).

It's Time to Get Connected!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, believe that it is time, on the eve of the Olympic Games bid selection for Chicago 2016, that Chatham now plan ahead and seek to have the digital divide between us and the affluent suburbs be crossed so that we are technologically ready for the Summer Games (Olympic Stadium will be only 1 mile away). If South Korea can have download speed of 20.4 megabits per second, then the infrastructure must be put in place where by this year's end we will have that speed and more for all of all tech-savvy residents. It is time for the City of Chicago Office of Cable and Communications to make it real, very soon, before this area is overwhelmed by the broadband and WI-Fi demand of waves of tourist and journalist hungry for every Olympics.

Illinois Voter Group Sues to Overturn Chicago Parking Meter PrivatizationSource: The Truth about Cars.com
Motorists have been hard hit by the increase in the cost of parking in in Chicago, Illinois that began with a deal struck in February.
In the central business district, for example, the cost to park for an hour doubled from $1 an hour to $2 and will quadruple to $4 an hour by 2013. Meters must also now be fed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hikes came after Mayor Richard J. Daley (D) leased the city’s 36,000 parking meters to Morgan Stanley for 75 years in return for an up-front payment of $1.15 billion. The Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO), a liberal government reform group, fought back last Wednesday by filing a lawsuit hoping a judge would find the parking meter contract unlawful.
“This is a horrible deal for Chicago taxpayers,” IVI-IPO spokesman Owen Brugh said. “But IVI-IPO intends to hold the city accountable. Even the city of Chicago has to follow the law.”Read the entire article and download the suit: click here>>>2. From: Raynard Subject: Tribune writer looks at 2016 Ward Meetings, Community Unreadiness and Olympic gamesmanship Chicago 2016's ward meetings wind down, but opposition, questions remainSource: Chicago Tribune
City's financial guarantees for Olympic Games raise concerns among residentsIn a sweltering meeting room filled to overflowing, Bronzeville residents fired one question after another at Chicago's 2016 Olympic boosters."If we can find these resources for an Olympics, why can't we find them for year-round?" asked Kelly Saulsberry, a museum program coordinator, who said she found it "really troubling" that the city's promises of youth sport programs and economic development were contingent on landing the Summer Games. Her pointed question and comments, like many others aimed at the bid leadership during a 2 1/2 -hour session on the South Side, drew vigorous applause. As the Chicago 2016 bid team winds down its 11th-hour sales blitz in the city's 50 wards, it has become clear that the meetings have not doused the brush fires stoked in June when Mayor Richard Daley did an about-face, saying he would sign the host-city contract placing full financial responsibility for any losses on the city."People are just not buying into the spin coming out," said Stephen Alexander, a senior research fellow at the Egan Urban Center at DePaul University, who has attended several meetings. But just by enduring the grillings, the bid team may be helping its cause, observers say."While clearly there are some negatives coming out of it, I think ... it probably has been good in terms of demonstrating some transparency and openness," said public relations expert Jonathan Dedmon, a principal at the Dilenschneider Group. The meetings also are likely to play well with the International Olympic Committee, which will choose among Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo on Oct. 2. "This is somewhat a perception game that the bid cities are playing with the IOC voters," said Paul Swangard, a sports marketing expert at the University of Oregon. From: Metropolis Subject: President Obama Celebrates Minority BusinessesTHE WHITE HOUSEMINORITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT WEEK, 2009- - - - - - -BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAA PROCLAMATIONOur Nation's strength rests on the ingenuity and creativity of the American people. Across our country, almost 4 million minority-owned firms exemplify this spirit as they create jobs, develop new products and services, and promote community and economic development. The growth and expansion of these businesses is an increasingly critical part of our economic recovery and long-term prosperity. At a time when too many Americans are facing extraordinary economic challenges, supporting the development of minority owned enterprises will help accelerate the revitalization of our economy. Of the 630,000 minority-owned employer firms, these businesses are providing employment and stability to 4.7 million workers while renewing urban neighborhoods and rural communities. They represent a key component of future growth for our economy.Minority Enterprise Development Week is an opportunity to commemorate the tremendous value minority entrepreneurs and their employees bring to our economy and our Nation as a whole. They embody the timeless American values of hard work, integrity, and optimism. They also serve as role models to countless children who want to start their own business or reach their personal goals. Through their accomplishments and example, these leaders affirm that, with determination and commitment, every American can achieve his or her potential and live out their dreams.NOW, THEREFORE, I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States do hereby proclaim August 23 through August 29, 2009, as Minority Enterprise Development Week. I call upon all Americans to celebrate this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities to recognize the many contributions of our Nation's minority enterprises.IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.BARACK OBAMA

Members of the Scholarship Committee represent the education, business and professional communities in the 34th District.Rep. Howard praised, both, the work of the committee and partnership with Ada S. McKinley Education Services, that made possible a presentation from Sharon Harper-Logan, Ada S. McKinley Education Services, who shared “words of wisdom” with the youth and their family members, present. “Citizens of the 34th District owe a debt of gratitude to those men and women who have devoted their time and effort to the success of this selection process. Their job is not an easy one---having to review scores of applications and selecting eight (8) most deserving individuals from the numbers of those applying,” said Howard. She added, “We, highly, value our partnership with an organization that is as well-respected as Ada S. McKinley and which has such an outstanding reputation for improving the quality educational opportunities for our youth.” At another reception, held one week earlier, Representative Howard joined with her colleagues---State Senator Donne Trotter (D-17) and State Representative Marlowe Colvin (D-33) in extending best wishes and providing “useful gifts for college students” to individuals from each of the three districts who were not awarded the scholarship. Student at this reception, also benefitted from a presentation by Harper-Logan, who, on behalf of her agency Director, Revie Sorey, presented book scholarships and provided refreshments for the festivities.

The story of the families of Jesse Owens and Luz Long coming together to watch the long jump event at the World athletics championships last

Saturday from the box where Adolf Hitler once sat, has moved yours truly to recall a memorable visit by the legendary athlete to Delhi over a half century ago. In the Cold War years of the 1950s when Delhi would be visited by American sporting icons, acting as that country's ambassadors, Owens, winner of four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, was the one who left the most abiding impression. As for Long, Owens' rival and friend in the Berlin long jump pit, a blue-eyed blond archetypal German, he went to war against the Allies in the North African desert as a young officer in Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps. He got killed there. As Owens had famously said, "Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold. Awards become corroded, friendships gather no dust." The Delhi of those years was several times smaller than the unmanageable mega metropolis it now has now grown into, but there was more athletic activity. More people would turn up to watch a Milkha Singh or a Gurbachan Randhawa train on the cinder track of the National Stadium than they do now for national competitions. It was in such an ambience that Owens made his visit. After spending an afternoon or two with young boys and girls on the track, Owens was scheduled to address a gathering at Sapru House. Dressed like a diplomat in a black suit and a matching bow tie, Owens made a striking figure as he took the stage. When it was time for questions, a curious young girl - she must be a grandmother now - asked what diet she should eat to be a good sprinter. Owens said that he didn't know much of diet aspect. He then brought the house down by saying, "If my mother cooked beans I ate beans, if she cooked meat I ate meat, and on the rare days she cooked both I ate both beans and meat." Owens made no secret of his impoverished childhood in Maryland, Ohio, where his school coach would bring beef from his home and tell the scrawny boy to eat it and put some muscle on his bones. "The purpose of going to the Olympics is to win. Otherwise you can hold them in your own backyard." To recall forgotten history, the special box in which the Owens and Long families sat at Berlin is the same from where Hitler, after being mesmerized by Dhyan Chand's wizardry, is reported to have offered to make the humble soldier from the 2/14 Punjab Regiment a general should he desire to join the German Army, as the story goes. The nervous maestro, whose 104th birthday falls on August 29, decided to return to his own sweet home, or barracks, of his Jhelum-based regiment. Read the article online: click here>>>12. From: Raynard Subject: Sugar Ray Robinson Revisited – Part One Sugar Ray Robinson Revisited – Part OneBy Thomas HauserSource: MaxBoxing.com Sugar Ray Robinson is the gold standard against which all fighters are judged.“He had everything,” legendary trainer Eddie Futch said after Robinson died. “Boxing skills, punching power, a great chin, mental strength. There was nothing he couldn’t do. He knew almost everything there was to know about how to box. When Ray was in his prime, he owned the ring like no fighter before or since.”Robinson was a natural welterweight who knocked out middleweights with one punch. In his first 131 professional fights, he lost once. During that time, he beat Henry Armstrong, Sammy Angott (twice), Fritzie Zivic (twice), Tommy Bell (twice), Kid Gavilan (twice), and Jake LaMotta (five times). In 201 fights spanning twenty-five years (a career that began before Pearl Harbor and ended at the height of the war in Vietnam), Robinson suffered a single “KO by.” That came when he challenged Joey Maxim for the light-heavyweight championship and collapsed from heat prostration after controlling the fight for thirteen rounds. Sixty years after Robinson was in his prime, he’s still thought of as the greatest fighter to ever lace on a pair of gloves. "Just Like Detroit!"

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, note that 79Th Street from State Street to Cottage Grove Avenue, seems to have a young thuggery element walking up and down the sidewalks and driving up and down as well, some to intimidate and harass long-time residents. There are loud police and fire sirens heard every hour on the hour every day. What is needed is more policing with hourly bicycle, motorcycle and car patrols done by teams of police officers on a daily basis in concert with the surveillance cameras already in place at several locations. As well, will we have a glimpse of the future for Chathamites in the pre-Olympic era with a gentrification wave from whites and a crime wave from blacks designed and intended to force long-time residents to sell their homes and move, in what could be called "residential bullying?"

Blog Question

Would "South-Looping" Chatham be good for the future for long-time residents and newcomers, and would it rid Chatham of all of the vacant storefronts up and down 75Th and 79Th Streets between State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and the many boarded-up vacant foreclosed houses and apartment buildings that dot the neighborhood, while erasing all of the damage low-income "riff-raft" of the younger generation have done to public and private property in Chatham? Leave your comments on the comment line.

Editorial

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel it is high time for all community leaders to invite President Barack Obama to a dinner party with canopies set up in the parking lot behind Mayor Harold Washington's favorite restaurant, Izola's, at 79Th Street and Rhodes Avenue, with U.S. Senator Roland W. Burris as the official host (he is a long-time Chathamite), and have the dinner party the Mayor had in September, 1986, after he won the City Council battle, known familiarly as "Council Wars" and present economic development proposals for Chatham from federal stimulus funding to create jobs desperately needed, especially for the young people in the neighborhood, and to build a community center, a senior citizens center at the vacant lot at 82ND Street and King Drive, and a health and fitness club on the vacant lot that was the former site of Rhodes Theater at 79Th Street and Rhodes Avenue, like Bosse Sports in Boston, and to invite the upscale building of trendy shops and restaurants and tony places for people to dance and relax, like elegant supper clubs, to revitalize the area with a cash infusion of $5-7 billion dollars (you should know the nationwide white community received billions of dollars of federal largess under President Ronald Reagan to build absolutely beautiful neighborhoods all over the United States and a comfortable living in suburbia). So let's not waste time doing so.

October 2nd, a Day of Destiny!!!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, would like to know what you, fellow Chathamites, think about, "what if Chicago actually did win the 2016 Summer Olympics" by being awarded such by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, and what impact it would have one your live, livelihood, and future, like job and business opportunities, crowds, traffic, real estate speculation...would you sub-let your house or apartment in the month leading up to the games, would you just escape and go on vacation those 16 days of summer? Let us know by clicking on the comments line.

Fun Facts

Did you know that the median annual income in Chatham is $58,000 with retirees making $38,000 and that the average home price for a single-family house is between $200,000 to up over $1,000,000?

BRONZECOMM ALERT: Jazz Institute's 7th Annual Gala - Honoring Grace: Michelle Obama

Editorial

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel it is time for all the leaders in politics and business in our community to canvass President Barack Obama and Senator Roland W. Burris to provide federal largess through a stimulus package of $5-$7 billion dollars to revitalize Chatham through rebuilding, remodeling, rehabbing our housing stock, resurfacing our streets, especially the main arteries of 79Th Street and King Drive, rebuilding and modernizing our infrastructure at all levels, fortifying our public works, and reinvigorating our retail sector with new department stores that contrast the suburban malls. And it might be a good idea to propose an athletic center, a fitness club to be built on the site of the former Rhodes Theater vacant lot at 79Th and Rhodes Avenue like that of BosseSports in Boston. See bossesports.com. It is up to them, our local community leaders to meet President Obama and Senator Burris, himself a long-time resident of Chatham who can serve as a conduit, one-on-one in person, in the Oval Office and the Senator's office in the Dirksen Building on the Mall in the District of Columbia, to seek out this federal funding to turn Chatham around from a deteriorating neighborhood, ghettoized by apathetic newcomers to a great, reborn area with a high standard of living, an unparalleled level of comfort, ready to welcome all visitors from around the world, all over the world for an Olympic Games in 2016 where the main venues, including Olympic Stadium, the site of the track and field events, and the opening and closing ceremonies will only be one (1) mile just north of Chatham. Let us begin right away, shirt sleeves up, and proposals for the future ready.

Chatham's Hedge Against the Recession

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel it is high time, during the current economic downturn, for there to be constructive solutions that will positively impact our residents and our community, namely, for the establishment of many bank branches and investment bank branches in Chatham, with the City Council granting tax-favored status to Chatham, that is, zone Chatham for five years where for banking institutions and financial services firms have the right and privilege to do business in Chatham tax-free of local levies like business head taxes, certain property taxes, and city and county income taxes for an initial five year period as long as they hire residents of Chatham in their workforces, train Chatham residents for placement for financial services positions, and most importantly, invest and loan to Chatham residents for real estate mortgages at affordable and competitive rates and the Chatham-based and Chatham-owned businesses for credit facilities that promote growth and expansion. And in so doing, put a bank branch on every block of all of the retail strips, namely down 75Th, 79Th, and 87Th Streets between State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, and on Cottage Grove Avenue between 75Th and 87Th Streets as well as Chatham Village Plaza, Chatham Ridge Plaza and West Chatham Plaza. In other words, turn Chatham into the Switzerland of black America.

Moving Out!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, have noticed that long-time middle-class residents of Chatham are now moving out, with the ever increasing expense of getting through the recent harsh winters, in light of the changing neighborhood, intimidation from young black males playing basketball in the alleys with no respect for residents who need to park their cars in their garages, the ever-rising crime wave, the degentrification of Chatham, or perhaps ghettoizing of Chatham with the influx on ex-CHA residents into Section 8 housing units, in both houses and apartment buildings (there are approximately more than 1400 Section 8 families now living in Chatham after having been relocated from the projects), and with them, the ills of the inner city, like, crime, drugs, children having children, and the drop in the quality of life in the area. Chatham during the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's and even into the late 90's had a standard of living comparable to any middle-class suburb in the white community, with a comfortable living, even more so than Pill Hill.

Action from the City Needed to Better Manage Traffic at the 79th & King Drive Intersection

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel that the City of Chicago Department of Transportation, should, in light of the strong possibility that Chicago would be awarded the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, act in a pro-active manner and plan for the congestion and traffic gridlock that will occur on a massive scale for the prime intersection of Chatham, namely, 79Th & King Drive.

Is Chatham "Olympic-ready"?

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, have expressed concern about the future with an anticipated Olympic venue, even Olympic Stadium, only one mile north of the Chatham community--how would we Chathamites be affected, especially if the Olympics will be bigger than Beijing, with all of the waves of tourist, journalist, and most importantly, real estate speculators in the years approaching the opening ceremony, would do to our quality of life, peace and quiet, and economic opportunities it would bring. We invite all residents to express their views on the comment line.

Wise Latina--YES!!!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, congratulate the appointment by President Barack Obama, the confirmation by the United States Senate, and inauguration of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomeyer.

Blog Question

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, have notice an influx of young whites into the Chatham enclave over the past three years. Do you think the current white influx into Chatham are nothing more than real estate flippers look for a quick cash turnover, foreseeing Chicago winning the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and the real estate bonanza it would foster? Or is it just another opportunity for them to take advantage of a city housing department program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that was scandalized by the flipping done in University Village (near the University of Illinois' Circle Campus) by white suburbanites who knew about a little-known program for middle-income people to buy into a condominium as a first-time buyer. Governor Quinn Signs Major Legislation to Increase Transparency in State Government

Launches website to make state spending information accessible

Governor Pat Quinn joined with Attorney General Lisa Madigan and members of the Illinois Reform Commission to sign bills to increase transparency and accountability in state government. The legislation strengthens the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and ensures the state’s boards and commissions are open and accessible to the public.

R20;The people of Illinois deserve an open, ethical and transparent government,” said Governor Quinn. “This legislation provides greater oversight to ensure our government complies whenever possible with the Freedom of Information Act, protects the integrity of our boards and commissions and makes state government more accountable to the people we serve.”

The FOIA legislation (Senate Bill 189), sponsored by Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), rewrites the Illinois Freedom of Information Act to give the Attorney General’s Office authority to decide disputes between those requesting information and governmental bodies.

R20;Today, Illinois comes out of the Stone Age and into the modern era of transparency and openness,” said Attorney General Madigan. “By creating a public access counselor with binding opinion authority to fight for an open and accountable government, Illinois is now at the nation's forefront. With this new law, the people of Illinois will now have a greater ability to know what their government is doing."

In addition to creating a permanent public access counselor within the Attorney General’s Office to oversee enforcement of the act, it strengthens fines for noncompliance. The legislation also allows fewer exemptions to the act and shortens the time for a government to respond to a request.

Governor Quinn also signed Senate Bill 1602, sponsored by Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) and Rep. Jack Franks (D-Woodstock). This bill establishes strict ethics requirements and restrictions for current and prospective members of state boards and commissions appointed by the Governor and calls for the creation of a website that provides information about board and commission membership.

At a meeting of the Illinois Reform Commission in April, Governor Quinn launched Appointments.Illinois.gov. The site allows Illinois citizens to access information about membership and vacancies in the state’s 300 boards and commissions and fill out online applications for those appointments that are made by the Governor. Thousands of applications have been filed since the site’s launch.

The legislation also requires each board and commission with a website and full-time information technology staff to make information regarding its meetings available online.

Today the Governor also launched the Illinois Transparency and Accountability Portal to provide Illinoisans with access to state government spending information. The website makes the State’s expenditures and employee pay data available through a single, searchable portal: Accountability.Illinois.gov.

Supreme Court Orders New Look at Death Row Case
Source: New York Times.com

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a federal trial court in Georgia to consider the case of Troy Davis,
who is on death row in state prison there for the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer. The case has
attracted international attention, and 27 former prosecutors and judges had filed a brief supporting
Mr. Davis. Seven of the witnesses against Mr. Davis have recanted, and several people have implicated
the prosecution’s main witness as the actual killer of the officer, Mark MacPhail.

The Supreme Court’s decision was unsigned, only a paragraph long and in a number of respects highly unusual.
It instructed the trial court to “receive testimony and make findings of fact” about whether new evidence clearly
established Mr. Davis’s innocence. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who joined the court this month, did not participate.

The decision set off a sharp debate between Justices John Paul Stevens and Antonin Scalia about Supreme Court
procedure, the reach of a federal law meant to limit death row appeals and the proper treatment of claims of innocence.

“The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death,” Justice Stevens wrote in a concurrence joined by
Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer, “clearly provides an adequate justification for holding
an evidentiary hearing.”

Justice Scalia, in a dissent joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, said the hearing would be “a fool’s errand,”
because Mr. Davis’s factual claims were “a sure loser.”

Subject: Walkathon for African Centered Education

Chicago among supporters of educator who finished 1069 mile walk for our children
By Taki S. Raton

He sat out at 9 A.M. on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from his home school base in West Palm Beach, Florida. His goal was to walk a distance of 1069 miles through 43 counties streaming the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and finally to the nation’s Capital.

Dubbed the Walkathon “Trek for African Centered Education,” Amefika Geuka, fellow “Surrogate” walker Mawusi Hazard, 61, and photographer Nadja Neptune placed sights on their total 696 hour mission – to reach Washington, D.C. by Tuesday, August 12. The role of surrogate walker Hazard was to officially walk in lieu of Geuka if a rest were needed or if the pace slowed to ensure that the required number of miles per day was covered within the allotted time. Additional to photo documentation, Neptune was also the pace car driver for the altering trekkers.

Geuka, 69, is co-founder and current Board chairman of the Joseph Littles-Nguzo Saba Charter School, Florida’s only African Centered public school, which completed ten years of continuous operation earlier this year. The purpose of the walk was to raise money to close the funding gap for the Joseph Littles’ academy and to dramatize the urgent need nationally of African Centered Education for children of African descent. Contributors pledged donations for every mile ventured.

“When asked for a quote on Amefika and his Walkathon to Washington, the first person that came to mind was Dr. John Henrik Clarke and his film ‘The Great and Mighty Walk,’” said Dr. Anderson Thompson, professor of Inner City Studies at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies in Chicago.

“Geuka’s is indeed for our day participating in a great and might walk. He is carrying out the instructions of those who have gone before as he too manifest qualities of self-reliance, scholarship, determination, discipline, conviction, and achievement. His trek further exemplifies the commitment of our esteemed elders by demonstrating intergenerational continuity in this our collective quest for the liberation of the minds of our people - particularly our children,” he adds.

Geuka and his party arrived at his scheduled time in Washington D.C. at noon, Tuesday August 12, having successfully met over 29 days a daily average of 33 to 35 miles requiring 10 to 15 hours per day. He was greeted by supporters, trek organizers and by students from the area Sarafina Youth Ensemble and Nation House Academy.

Thursday, August 13, was designated as "African Centered Education Elevation Day" in Malcolm X Park. A “symbolic” walk from the park to the White House was scheduled where a resolution was read to the President calling for the acknowledgment that African Centered Education is the most logical approach to effectively educate children of African descent. Following the resolution, a victory celebration was planned to commemorate the completion of the walk and to strengthen the commitment to elevate the education of Black children.

“This Walkathon is not a protest. We are walking to speak truth to power for the elevation, recognition, and respect of the African centered instructional and developmental paradigm for African American children,” positions Geuka in a recent web cast radio interview.

Born in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, on August 17, 1887, Marcus Garvey
was the youngest of 11 children. Garvey moved to Kingston at the age of 14,
found work in a print shop, and became acquainted with the living conditions
of the laboring class. He quickly involved himself in social reform,
participating in the first Printers' Union strike in Jamaica in 1907 and in
setting up the newspaper The Watchman. Leaving the island to earn money

to finance his projects, he visited Central and South America, amassing evidence that black people everywhere were victims of discrimination.
He visited the Panama Canal Zone and saw the conditions under which the West Indians lived and worked. He went to Ecuador, Nicaragua,
Honduras, Colombia and Venezuela. Everywhere, blacks were experiencing great hardships and discrimination.

Garvey returned to Jamaica distressed at the situation in Central America, and appealed to Jamaica's colonial government to help improve the
plight of West Indian workers in Central America. His appeal fell on deaf ears. Garvey also began to lay the groundwork of the Universal Negro
Improvement Association (UNIA), to which he was to devote his life. Undaunted by lack of enthusiasm for his plans, Garvey left for England
in 1912 in search of additional financial backing. While there, he met a Sudanese-Egyptian journalist, Duse Mohammed Ali. While working for
Ali's publication African Times and Oriental Review, Garvey began to study the history of Africa, particularly, the exploitation of black peoples
by colonial powers. He read Booker T. Washington's “Up From Slavery”, which advocated black self-help.

In 1914 Garvey organized the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and its coordinating body, the African Communities League (ACL).
In 1920 the organization held its first convention in New York. The convention opened with a parade down Harlem's Lenox Avenue. That evening,
before a crowd of 25,000, Garvey outlined his plan to build an African nation-state. In New York City his ideas attracted popular support, and
thousands enrolled in the UNIA. He began publishing the newspaper The Negro World and toured the United States preaching Black Nationalism
to popular audiences. His efforts were successful, and soon, the association boasted over 1,100 branches in more than 40 countries. Most of
these branches were located in the United States, which had become the UNIA's base of operations. There were, however, offices in several
Caribbean countries, Cuba having the most. Branches also existed in places such as Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Ghana,
Sierra Leone, Liberia, Namibia and South Africa. He also launched some ambitious business ventures, notably the Black Star Shipping Line.

Garvey promoted two new business organizations — the African Communities League and the Negro Factories Corporation. Financial betrayal
by trusted aides and a host of legal entanglements (based on charges that he had used the U.S. mail to defraud prospective investors) eventually
led to Garvey's imprisonment in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary for a five-year term. In 1927 his half-served sentence was commuted, and he was
deported to Jamaica by order of President Calvin Coolidge.

Garvey then turned his energies to Jamaican politics, campaigning on a platform of self-government, minimum wage laws, and land and judicial
reform. He was soundly defeated at the polls, however, because most of his followers did not have the necessary voting qualifications. In 1935
Garvey left for England where, in near obscurity, he died on June 10, 1940, in a cottage in West Kensington.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey advocated that Africans control the wealth of Africa. He taught that control, control of resources, control of self, control
of nation, requires preparation, Garveyism was about total preparation.
