Civil Rights veteran and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. was the guest speaker at the True Vine Ministries services, which are held in the McClymonds High School Auditorium in West Oakland, as part of an observance of Black History Month.
Rev. Zachary Carey of True Vine acknowledged many community leaders in attendance including Mayor Libby Schaaf, former Mayor Elihu Harris, Oakland City Council President Lynette McElhaney, OUSD Chief of Post Secondary Readiness Bernard McCune, Elaine Brown and Post Publisher Paul Cobb.
Rev. Jackson spoke to the “wickedness in high places,” referring to the role of banks and financial institutions in the financial crisis. He also stressed the neglect, exclusion and disparities in the hiring practices of technology companies headquartered in Silicon Valley.
Jackson received positive support from Schaaf for a resolution calling for the Constitutional Right to Vote.
The Oakland officials also said they would call for a resolution in favor of overturning the Supreme Courts Citizens United decision.

Mayor Schaaf thanked Rev. Jackson for his outstanding work of pressuring technology firms “to remove barriers at all levels.” She pledged to work with Rev. Jackson to bring technology jobs for Oakland residents and to work to prevent gentrification.
She said she wants to institutionalize community policing and require “transparency across the board,” which means that footage taken by police officers must be made available to the public.
