Why we celebrate Juneteenth?

Grand Crossing Park Neighborhood Network
"...What YOU can do for YOUR Neighborhood"
Dearest Neighbors & stakeholders,
One might think it unbelievable, but there are more than a few people who ask why we celebrate Juneteenth! They think we're somehow celebrating having been slaves, instead or respecting those who finally achieved a long sought goal after a terrible struggle. The milestone recognizes the victory of many different kinds of people joining forces against evil.
We celebrate Juneteenth as a remembrance. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. We remember because it is only right and responsible to give credence to achievements of the past. The cause of freedom achieved during that period was monumental.
Our Network chiefly comes together for Juneteenth as a capacity building mechanism. Building connections to ensure safer neighborhood and a better future. The end of school is reason enough to come together as a community and ensure students know their history. Ideally, we should come together and recognize many achievements of heritage, family and community. Juneteenth gives us that opportunity. What we are courageous enough do with it ...is up to us.
