Dear Friends,
As you know, I believe investing in a quality education is critical to providing our next generation of leaders with the skills necessary to improve our communities. In an effort to give our children educational opportunities that stretch their minds, challenge their assumptions, and provide them with the most well rounded education possible, I am pleased to announce the "State Representative for a Day" essay competition. This competition, open to any student living or going to school within the 34th District, will provide our elementary and junior high school students a forum to display their writing skills while having their ideas and voices heard in our state's legislative process.
The competition consists of two divisions: elementary (5th and 6th grades) and junior high school (7th and 8th grades). Participating students must write an essay of no more than 500 words on the topic: "If I were State Representative, I would..."
The essay winners and their parents will be invited to join me as my guests in Springfield during a session of the Illinois House of Representatives. Essays must be submitted to the participant's homeroom or social studies teacher no later thanJanuary 15, 2016. A panel of educators and community leaders will select winning essays with the winners announcedFebruary 1, 2016.
Please see the attached information packet for additional details. Happy holidays and I look forward to 2016 being a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year for us all.
Warmest regards,
Elgie R. Sims, Jr.
