Rep. Sims R eacts to the R elease of LaQuan McDonald V ideo and C alls for P eaceful P rotests
CHICAGO, Ill --- State Rep. Elgie Sims released the following statement following the release of the video showing the shooting death of LaQuan McDonald:
"I join the chorus of voices outraged by the video showing the shooting death of LaQuan McDonald by a Chicago Police Officer who now stands charged with his murder. I also join the host of people praying and asking for a calm, rationale, focused demonstration of that outrage. The entire community is outraged, and deservedly so, but let's turn this outrage into action, not the destruction of our community.
Earlier this year, I worked, with community groups and law enforcement on a bipartisan set of reforms that will improve the quality of policing services across this state. During our negotiations of Senate Bill 1304, the Police and Community Relations and Law Enforcement Officer Worn Camera Act, we knew a situation of this type could occur in the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois and we worked to take a proactive approach to addressing these challenges.
The loss of a loved one is an unspeakable pain, and I commend Mr. McDonald's family for their courage and concern for the community in calling for a peaceful reaction to this most difficult situation.
We stand at a moment in time requiring the best of our community and I know we will rise to the occasion."
Sims represents the 34th Illinois House District, which includes portions of the South Side of Chicago, Chicago's south suburbs, and Will and Kankakee counties.
