What is a "faux gated community"?

Chatham/Avalon Park Community Council said...

In its modern form, a faux gated community is a form of residential community or housing estate containing strictly-controlled entrances for pedestrians, bicycles, and automobiles, and often characterized by a closed perimeter of walls and fences. Gated communities usually consist of small residential streets and include various shared amenities. For smaller communities this may be only a park or other common area. For larger communities, it may be possible for residents to stay within the community for most day-to-day activities. Gated communities are a type of common interest development, but are distinct from intentional communities. Gated communities provide genuine security to the upper class as well as expatriates.

Given that gated communitites are spatially a type of enclave, it has been argued that they have a negative effect on the overall social capital of the broader community outside the gated community.

Some gated communities, usually called guard-gated communities, are staffed by private security guards and are often home to high-value properties, and/or or set up as retirement villages. Some gated communities are secure enough to resemble fortresses and are intended as such.

i would say no to those...such a gated communiyt, bounded by 81st to 82nd, prairie to Indiana, seems so isolated. i don't believe i have seen any of those residents at a community meeting.

Such places discourage true community, and make a neighborhood as lifeless & generic as a suburb.

A suburb does not have surveillance cameras!

Since 1968, suburbs have all the stores, shops, athletic and academic facilities at all levels, and the best amenities imaginable so you don't have to go into the city!

If my memory serves me correctly. Chatham has an Olmpic size swimming pool, pro quality tennis courts, world class basketball tournaments, pan african dining, two of the top elementary schools in the state, etc, etc.

Again if you don't like living here why don't you move with IFI world.

Where is Chatham's Olympic-size swimming pool and pro quality tennis courts?

ifiworld said...

worlee really is "just like Detroit."

Worlee Glover said...

The pool and tennis courts are at Tully Park, Duh. Maybe you need to go back to the sand dunes

But that is public park district property...what about having a Chatham country club with a swimming club and indoor tennis courts?

If you can prove a country club can work in this community then by all means have at it. What's wrong with a public swimming pool and tennis courts?

Chatham is rife with gang members, riff raft and criminal elements. Most of these people are from the prisons who go directly into the projects. SAY NO TO THE GHETTO!!! Make Chatham Section 8-free!
