TBTNEWS HEADLINEDream Center Becomes Reality
Special Correspondent: Pastor Chris Harris
I pray this letter finds you and yours doing well. I am writing to extend a very special invitation for you to join me in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day where Bright Star Community Outreach is hosting a community fundraiser in support of the Bronzeville Dream Center (BDC) on Sunday, January 17th from 3:00pm - 7:00pm at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 West 115th St., Merrionette, IL.
It is a tremendous philanthropic opportunity for peace-loving people of all faiths and backgrounds to offer a way to lift your voice in support of our youth in violent Chicago communities. While many ask “why won’t this vicious cycle of violence stop?”, most fail to realize the families of these victims or perpetrators have never received counseling after such traumatic experiences.
Though Bright Star Community Outreach has been serving community families for eight years now, the Bronzeville Dream Center project began with my trip to Israel. The BDC, inspired by NATAL in Israel, is dedicated to serving Chicago with counseling and other social services aimed at minimizing negative factors that cause violence and increasing protective influences that yield positive outcomes.
We endeavor to focus on five core competencies: Counseling, Parenting, Mentorship, Workforce Development and Advocacy. It's unique model will utilize faith leaders as post-trauma counselors and use community surveys as the basis for services that directly correspond to the unique needs of constituents. Its end-to-end approach offers a replicable, evidenced-based template for risk assessment and program evaluation. It is my hope that many people who have survived nightmares will begin to “dream again.” Although the BDC will sit in Bronzeville, it will serve Chicago!
I often tell people, “SAY Nothing, Until You DO Something About Chicago Violence!” So if you have been looking for a way to get involved and help…here it is: BrightStarChurchChicago.com.
