Hooray for Roland Burris!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, give high praises to one of its own, Former Illinois Attorney General and Comptroller Roland Burris, a fellow Chatham resident, to his appointment by Illinois Governor Roderick Blagojevich to the vacant United States Senate seat for the expiring term of now President-elect Barack Obama! He is well-seasoned and qualified to fill the seat to a term ending in 2010. Burris, 71 and a Democrat, is a longtime political player in Illinois who has run for governor before, including in a primary challenge against Blagojevich. Obama backed him over Blagojevich in that race. He has also run for the Senate before as well. We wish him well for his swearing-in and the necessary constituent legislative agenda that can now be introduced, sponsored and managed through the Congress for a President Barack Obama signature into law. I hope now that a bill for statutory retroactivity for the 1991 Civil Rights Act for pending Section 1981 claim on the date of enactment will be passed after 18 year hiatus.
