For 60 years Chatham has been the African
American Rock Star, 6 generations later it
still is. Chatham is a brand, a state of
mind,
a middle class dividend. Chatham has the
distinction of being perhaps the only
neighbor
hood that developed from a European Middle
Class Community to a Middle Class African
American Community.
In 1950, the African American residency of
Chatham was 1%, by 1960 it had increased to
63.7% .
Caucasians left Chatham in large numbers in
the
1950’s and 1960’s in record numbers partly
because
of the scare tactics used by some real
estate agents.
Chatham is in transition, yet it is still a
vibrant
Middle Class community that has grown
generations
of educators, public & civic servants,
entrepreneurs,
president,
ceo’s & coo’s of companies, insurance producers,
engineers, doctors, plumbers, postal workers,
police
officers, it professionals, attorneys, fire personnel .

for 20 years & as a officer for 36 years and former CAPCC Executive Vice President Maryellen Drake who
served as Exec. Vice for 18 years and as an officer for 28 years are second
generation CAPCC members.
Tate’s
& Drake’s fathers served and volunteered in the Chatham community. Mr. ElwinTate
was a CAPCC founding member and served as Vice-President on the board of
directors of CAPCC. Mr. Edward Drake was the President & founder of the 78th
& Champlain block club which he founded with the assistance of Vice
President Elwin Tate in 1958.
