Dear
Friend,
Help us
Preserve the Past for the Future.
Every artifact has
a unique story to tell. Where it has been, what it stood for, whom it belonged
to are all questions that can be answered by studying these pieces of history.
The object pictured here is no different. This 1950s era Mississippi Delta Diner
sign tells the story of the Jim Crow era when segregation was the law of the
land. Though the law called for separate but equal facilities, this sign
illustrates that African American people were still treated as second-class
citizens. Though this artifact represents a very difficult part of Americas
past, it is a past that we must remember and learn from.
The diner sign is
set to be displayed in our newest exhibition Freedom, Resistance and the
Journey Toward Equality but is in desperate need of conservation.
Conservation is a
time-consuming, specialized, and expensive task. Even the smallest artifacts may
require many hours of dedicated attention before being displayed in public.
The DuSable Museum
invites you to help us preserve our past for the future with a contribution
to the DuSable Museums Conservation Fund. Click on the Diner Sign to donate and learn more
about the artifacts your contribution will help conserve. The DuSable Museum is
a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, and your gift is fully tax deductible.
Thank you in
advance for your support and long live history!
