Are our efforts
to Save St. Dorothy Catholic Grammar School Worth It? YES and Here’s Why!
Throughout
its nearly one hundred-year existence as a Catholic institution of primary
education founded in excellence and service, St. Dorothy School prepared its
students for excellence in life. St.
Dorothy alumni include former and current executive directors, vice presidents,
attorneys, executive managers, IT professionals, doctors, political
consultants, educators and the list goes on and on.
The
general information provided over summer 2014 to the St. Dorothy Parish
Community was that we would have up to three years to address the concerns of
the school. Then without communicating a
change in this strategy, the Archdiocese and Parish announced that the school
would close and merge with St. Columbanus School. We are mystified by the total
disenfranchisement of the St. Dorothy Parish Community. We were not given proper notice and
opportunity to engage in problem resolution. The discussion went from possibilities in
September 2014 to a clear abandonment of the school and its ninety-eight (98)
years of needed service to its parish and community.
This
community needs a path to self-reliance, not another vacant building, not
another testament to hopelessness or track to the criminal justice system. We
need to re-commit to our community, not close St. Dorothy School. To accomplish
these goals, we have requested a meeting with Archbishop Cupich.
