2015 STARTS WITH A NEW SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION!
On December 20, 2014 the National
Black Agenda Consortium held a meeting of diverse Black organizations in Chicago
to discuss a draft of a 'municipal candidate questionnaire' to address the
concerns of the Black Community. Out of this evolved the ad hoc "Coalition of
Black Community Organizations" (CBCO) which produced the present
Questionnaire.
Join us at today's press
conference where CBOC launches the MUNICIPAL CANDIDATES QUESTIONNAIRE - a free
and open source tool for all community groups, churches, and forum
producers...and only the first in a series of civic engagement tools which
members of CBOC will seed this season.
In remembrance of the honorable
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the CBCO requests that candidates running for office
in Chicago's, February 24th municipal elections respond thoughtfully to our
Questionnaire and the call of the community. The Questionnaire focuses
exclusively on issues of special concern to the Black Community. All
organizations and those producing candidate forums are encouraged to freely use
all or part of the Questionnaire to engage their constituencies.
With dwindling participation in
government, lack of civic education in schools, and our institutions and orgs
overburdened by increasing community needs, CBCO has sought to simplify and
facilitate civic engagement with tools that help frame key issues and offer
insight into the greater possibilities of government.
We are not endorsing candidates;
we are making candidate responses widely available - each with our evaluation -
on our upcoming website, through our members, and in the media. The
Questionnaire will be emailed to all candidates with a link to complete the
Questionnaire online by January 31st. Answers will be tabulated and the results
widely published on February 9, 2015, the first day of Early Voting.
Peace and Blessings to you and
yours. We look forward to your presence this Thursday and to your ongoing
participation as we make history.
