One Man Killed, Two Boys Shot in Violence in Chatham

It was a night of exceptionally heavy violence and bloody 12 hours on a warm summer-like night in Chatham. There have been no arrests.85th_shooting_612.jpg

The first slaying in the grim tally came just before 6 p.m., Bernard Hatcher, 20, was shot multiple times in the 7800 block of South Maryland Avenue as he was walking down the street, Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said. Hatcher, of the 7800 block of South Eberhardt Avenue, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 7:03 p.m. according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

In the non-fatal shootings:

• Two more gang members, ages 17 and 16, were shot in the 300 block of East 85th Street. One was in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a thigh wound, the other in good condition at the same hospital with an arm wound. Police said a red pickup truck stopped at Nat King Cole Park where several people were playing basketball. Someone inside the truck shot at the players.

At about 7:30 p.m., authorities began receiving calls reporting gunfire at Nat King Cole Park at East 85Th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where multiple people were shot. Earlier reports indicated that several youths on bicycles with guns approached the basketball court.

Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the neck and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the right hip and calf. The 17-year-old was in critical condition, while the 16-year-old was in serious condition, Brundage said.

The two boys, purported gang members, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a Fire Department spokesman said.

• Yet another gang member, 22, was riding a bicycle in the 500 block of East 88th Street when he was shot in the thigh. He was in stable condition at Stroger. Police said he was uncooperative and did not want to report the injury.

These are terrible actions. This once proud community is allowing our own children to bring us to our knees. We know who these shooters are and there are some things we can do to help ourselves and improve our image. One thing that can be done is the CAPCC needs to remove the old, tatered and torn green banners that are hanging on the corner of 85th and King Drive. Why would an organization who touts themselves as a proud entity allow those old banners to flap and hang over Cole Park. Take them down and all the other old banners throughout the community down, also. Secondly, the CAPCC needs to stand for something. Please name one thing this organization has done over the past 10 years for this community. The leadership needs to step aside and let fresh, new and innovative ideas flow as to how to improve and maintain the community. The Executive Vice President of CAPCC can not stand up at their monthly meetings and talk about recruiting Avon personnel as part of her personal goal. This is not community development...this is selfish and personal. The President can not dodge the proposed hotel/motel development at 76th and State by not addressing the issue at the monthly meeting. People were there to discuss this topic. It is obvious that the community is opposed to this. Yet, Keith Tate, for reasons not yet determined, is trying to bring it in through the back door. If Park Manor has been opposed for 10 plus years, why is Lyle bringing it through the CAPCC. It will not be housed in the CAPCC boundaries but, in the Park Manor boundaries. CAPCC stands for Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, but it doesn't represent nor claim Avalon Park as a part of their boundaries. Then why claim Park Manor? And, Alderman Lyle, your post regarding letting the community decide on developments is phony. You didn't let the community decide on the Let's talk, Let's test housing debacle. Later, it was found that you were the Treasurer for this organization. You knew or was supposed to know that a misappropriation of funds was occurring. I bet the Feds will be interested in learning your side to this community debacle. Lyle allowed this development to occur in a residential area on Evans Street but never brought it to the Community for a vote. So, don't play the Hotel/motel development any differently that Let's talk, Let's test. Keith and MaryEllen are pawns in this game and yes, somebody got paid. I suspect both...Lyle and CAPCC. When has the CAPCC funds been audited by an outside source. Where does their funding come from and why is there so much "reimbursement" to Keith Tate. If the community asks these questions, I am quite sure they will be surprised. No transparency! If our Alderman and Community Organization would focus on improving the community instead of lining their pockets, maybe...just maybe some of this shooting and other mayhem would subside. A journey of a thousand miles must start somewhere!

Dear MIS-informed citizen:

The annonymity of the web allows misinformed and misguided persons to post the most ridiculous, inane, convoluted, unsubstantiated nonsense imaginable. But because you can't allow lies to float in cyberspace uncontested, I will briefly respond.

First, the building purchased by Let's Talk, Let's Test did not require a zoning change. As a result, the purchaser/developer was not required to present to the community.

Second, the Feds and everybody else can investigate and all will discover that I never received a single, solitary dime from Let's Talk, Let's Test.

Third, as I previously stated, Mr. Hedgeman is required to present to both CAPCC and PMNCC just as other developers who came into the 75-79th St. community with projects have done.

Fourth, nor am I ‘having’ any person go anywhere, because I have no interest in the hotel/motel development whatsoever.

Fifth, if you have proof of any unethical or criminal conduct on my part, sign your name to your blog. Or are you concerned that I will sue you for slander?

Finally, I know what I did today, yesterday and years of yesterdays to be a part of the solution. What if anything have you done other than sit on the sidelines throwing stones?

Alderman Lyle, have you been contact by federal authorities regarding the Let's Talk, Let's Test Foundation?

Hugh,

As is public record, Yes I was on the Board and yes I was Treasurer. No I have never been contacted by the FBI, nor the Ill. Attorney General, nor any other law enforcement or auditing entity.

But thank you Hugh for your interest in what occurs in the 6th Ward when you live so far, far away. Because you so graciously provided the link to the Tucker report, I now know that there is a federal investigation and as a result, I will make no further comments on the matter.

Alderman Lyle, thanks for your reply, neighbor! On another topic, are you a college football fan? Did you attend the Chicago Football Classic game between Southern University and Mississippi Valley State University at Soldier Field in September 2007?

Alderman Lyle, thanks again for your reply. Did some one ask you not to comment on the Let's Talk, Let's Test Foundation?

For my final comment of the night, Hugh, I have been at the Chicago Football Classic for the past 4 or 5 or 6 years in my own seat. I can't tell you who was playing because I don't go for the football. I go to support the scholarship fund. I go to take youth from my community, so that they can see black college students in the band, as cheerleaders, as players, etc., etc. and maybe, just maybe they will want to become black college students.

Getting to the point, No, I did not get a ticket to the LTLT Suite nor was I in the LTLT Suite.

And finally, no one has asked me not to discuss this matter.

Good night.

From when to when were you a member of the board of directors of the Let's Talk, Let's Test Foundation?

From when to when were you treasurer of the Let's Talk, Let's Test Foundation?

Thanks again!

Blacks are so tremendously monstrously EVIL...with the challenges of the inner-city: crime, drugs, children having children...Chris Rock was RIGHT!: "i've known the worst of white people and the worst of black people. And the worst of black people is worst than white people. And the worst of white people is pretty bad!"
