Chathamites can request a new bike rack for the neighborhood street corner by calling 311 or by visiting chicagobikes.org/bikeparking. Installation typically takes between a few weeks to several months. Bike racks can be installed only in locations that meet specific CDOT criteria:
There is sufficient need for bike parking;
The space is on public property such as sidewalks or CTA property;
The location is at least 40 feet behind bus stop signs and bus shelters and at least 6 feet from CTA subway exit portals;
The surface is concrete and not asphalt or grass;
The location is at least 6 feet from the outside edge of sidewalk cafes and at least 4 feet from general utilities;
The sidewalk is at least 10 feet wide;
The location is at least 2 feet from the tree planter basins and at least 3 feet from the curb, fence, wall, and fire hydrants.
