Parolee shot by cops faces felony charges

demetriuswhitney150.jpgAuthorities tonight charged a 38-year-old parolee who was shot by police Sunday morning with a number of felonies. The shooting was prompted when he pointed a handgun at officers during a traffic sto, according to police.

Demetrius Whitney, of the 6000 block of South Lafayette Avenue, was charged with four counts of aggravated assault to a police officer, one count of armed habitual criminal, one count of robbery, and one count of unlawful use of weapon by a felon, according to police.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Whitney -- who was hospitalized after the shooting -- would make a bond hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Police said they pulled over Whitney's vehicle at about 1:45 a.m. in the 500 block of East 79th Street in the Chatham neighborhood after a license plate check revealed the vehicle was stolen.

Whitney struggled with officers after they ordered him out of the vehicle and discovered a handgun, police said. Whitney then fled on foot and, as the officers began to chase him, Whitney pointed the handgun in the direction of the officers, police said.

The officers opened fire, striking the man, police said. Officers recovered the handgun at the scene. None of the officers was hurt.

Whitney has been out on parole since last month for a 2007 burglary conviction, according to state records. He has at least nine prior felony convictions dating back to 1990 ranging from retail theft and armed robbery to aggravated battery to a police officer, records show.

If convicted under the armed habitual criminal charge alone, Whitney faces between six and 30 years in prison for carrying a handgun.

This booklet contains a practice test which is designed similar to the actual test, to measure skills,
abilities, and knowledge required to perform a variety of census jobs. There are several parts to this test.
The parts include clerical skills, reading, number skills, evaluating alternatives, and organizational skills.
This test is a multiple-choice test. This means you will have several choices from which to select an
answer to each item.
Time yourself when taking the test by setting a timer or stopwatch for 30 minutes.
Make sure you understand all general instructions before you begin the test.
The multiple-choice items have 4 choices from which to make a selection. Choose the ONE BEST
answer to each question.
Try to answer every item on the test. You may not be totally sure of the answer to every item. For these,
make the most careful choice that you can. Although you will not be penalized for guessing, any answer
that you select should be based on careful reasoning.
You may do any figuring in this practice booklet.
Mark all your answers on the answer sheet provided. All answer marks should be dark and stay within
the circle.
Most persons will probably have time to finish the test, but you should work quickly nevertheless. Do not
spend too much time on any one item.
Do the following sample items before timing
yourself.
Multiply the numbers below:
The correct answer is 9.45, which is answer option B.
Look at the top of your answer sheet and find question
number S1. There are 4 circles next to this question
number, each corresponding to the letter of an answer
option. Fill the circle under the letter corresponding to
the correct answer B.
Now, try sample question S2. Mark the correct
answer on the answer sheet.
In the set of numbers below, choose the number that
does not follow the pattern.

40
140
239
340
The correct answer is 239, which is answer option C.
You should have filled in the circles under letter C for
question S2.
If you have any questions, ask them NOW.

There are directions applying to specific items or groups of items throughout the test. You must be able
to read and follow these directions without help from the examiner when taking the actual test.

The Field Operations Supervisor (FOS) will issue one
identification card to each Crew Leader. Crew Leaders
will issue one identification card to each enumerator.
Clerks will be issued identification cards by the FOS
only if necessary for them to work outside the office on
special tasks and in contact with the general public. All
identification cards issued to Crew Leaders and
enumerators must be turned in to the Field Operations
Supervisor upon completion of work, separation,
termination, or resignation. The FOS is responsible for
seeing that all returned cards are destroyed.
The overall responsibility for identification
cards rests with the Field Operations
Supervisor.
Clerks may not always be provided with
identification cards.
Enumerators who resign turn their
identification cards in to their supervisor, the
Crew Leader, who destroys them.
A Crew Leader’s identification card is destroyed
when he/she resigns.
A definition of a census term is given below. Read the
definition and then answer the question that follows it

Census takers who visit homes to collect census information are called enumerators. They are told
to use any person who owns or rents the housing unit as the "reference person" and then to list the
relationship of every household member to the "reference person." When an enumerator interviews
at 1105 Low Street, he talks to Mr. Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez says that both Mr. and Ms. Morales own
the house and all three are household members. Who should the census taker list as the reference
person?
The answer to question 11 is based on the information below.
A census taker is told to count only the following as living in a particular household:
• Family members living here, including babies still in the hospital
• Relatives living here
• Lodgers or boarders or hired hands living here
• Domestic employees or hired hands living here
• Other persons living here
• College students who stay here while attending college, even if their parents live elsewhere
• Persons who usually live here, but are temporarily away (including children in boarding school
below the college level, but excluding family members serving in the armed forces)
• Persons with a house elsewhere, but who stay here most of the week while working
In item 11, select the person the census taker would count as living in that household.

The corresponding areas of an address label and a coding sheet are identified by a letter and number, such as A1,
A2, etc. One records a number from the address label onto the corresponding area of the coding sheet by marking
the appropriate digits, placing one digit in each column. When there are more columns on the coding sheet than
there are digits in the numbers on the address label, the recorded numbers must be preceded by zeroes. See the
example above for A2, Unit number.

Gunman empties gun on man in car, reloads, empties again in Chatham

Myron Thomas was sitting in a car in the Chatham neighborhood Sunday night when a gunman opened fire on him two separate times, leaving him dead with 13 gunshot wounds, sources said.
Thomas, 25, of the 6500 block of South Harvard Avenue, was shot multiple times East 82nd Street and South Evans Avenue and was pronounced dead at 8:36 p.m. Sunday at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Thomas was sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2001 Oldsmobile when an unidentified gunman approached at 7:41 p.m. and fired shots into the vehicle, striking him several times, including in the head, police said.
Sources said Thomas was sitting in a parked car when another vehicle pulled up from behind and a gunman exited with a handgun of an unknown caliber and fired multiple shots into the vehicle in which Thomas was sitting.
People in the area noticed the shooting, and a neighbor told police she heard seven or eight shots. The gunman then discarded the empty clip, reloaded and began shooting again, sources said.
Responding officers found Thomas slumped over the wheel of the car and several bullet holes in the car. Chicago Fire Department ambulance No. 37 took Thomas to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Thomas reportedly suffered 13 gunshot wounds, sources said. An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Thomas had no listed gang affiliation, sources said. A motive was not immediately known, police said.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating, but nobody is in custody Monday morning.

The victim was walking with a group of about 30 people at the time when shots rang out and he was shot in the cheek, Greer said.
The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was reported to be stable, Greer said.
A motive remained unclear Saturday afternoon and police could not confirm whether the shooting was gang-related. No one was in custody at 3 p.m.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Male hit in police-involved shooting in Chatham

A male was shot by police fire yesterday, Sunday morning in the Chatham neighborhood.
At 1:45 a.m., Gresham District police officers initiated a traffic stop in the 500 block of East 79th Street after a license plate check revealed the vehicle to be stolen, police said.
After ordering the offender to exit the vehicle and attempting to place him into custody, officers discovered a weapon and a struggled ensued, police said.
The offender then fled on foot and the officers gave chase. At this time, the offender pointed the weapon in the direction of officers, and the officers fired, striking the offender, police said.
The offender was taken into custody in the 7800 block of South Vernon Avenue and taken to an area hospital, police said. No other injuries were reported. A gun was recovered on the scene.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.

Our December Monthly Meeting 2009 and Christmas Party

SLIDESHOW: http://picasaweb.google.com/capccchi/CAPCCChristmasPartyAndDecemberMonthlyMeeting# We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, held our December Monthly Meeting, and Christmas Party at the 2ND Floor Meeting Room, Northern Trust Bank, 78 & State Streets. Robert Shaw, Sylvester Baker, Judge Thaddeus Wilson, Justice John O. Steele, Elgie Sims, among several politicians and lawyers vying for the Democratic primary set for February 2, 2010, spoke at length about their campaigns and for your support. The crime report supported the precaution of to "know your neighbors" and to report the "bad neighbors" when a crime occurs. Note was mentioned that a number of lawyers, born and reared in Chatham are returning as adults to be residents in their own right in Chatham. But when asked if they would set up offices in Chatham, Justice Steele, authoritatively said, "our people won't go to them." The bounty of refreshments made a great party after the meeting for all of our members and guest speakers. Blog Question

Should we residents and members of Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, canvass President Barack Obama and Senator Roland Burris and Congressman Bobby Rush for Congressional earmarks to improve the quality of life and infrastructure of Chatham? Leave your comments on the comment line.

What If?

Wouldn't it be super it there was a Harrods and Barney's of New York to occupy the 84Th and King Drive vacant lot where Jewel-Osco once stood. Would some of this upscale magnitude be necessary to bring in the suburbanite shopper to upstart the economy of Chatham and create real opportunities and real jobs with real futures for our youth? Leave your comments on the comment line. All comments most welcome on this topic!

SPECIAL REPORT: The Future of Chatham

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, think that the direction of the community should go in the way of development, i.e., creating and re-creating a more suburban-type lifestyle for the residents. This would include an innovation-based, research and development(R&D)-based, idea-based, knowledge-based, and industrial-based (in high-technology) area for Chatham. Remember even former Mayor Jane Byrne said the future of Chicago would have to be high-tech. It could start with the new construction of the Whitney Young branch of the Chicago Public Library at 7901 S. King Dr. like that of the Bucktown Wicker Park branch that was constructed creating new jobs:
