TBTNEWS HEADLINEDream Center Becomes Reality
Special Correspondent: Pastor Chris Harris
I pray this letter finds you and yours doing well. I am writing to extend a very special invitation for you to join me in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day where Bright Star Community Outreach is hosting a community fundraiser in support of the Bronzeville Dream Center (BDC) on Sunday, January 17th from 3:00pm - 7:00pm at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 West 115th St., Merrionette, IL.
It is a tremendous philanthropic opportunity for peace-loving people of all faiths and backgrounds to offer a way to lift your voice in support of our youth in violent Chicago communities. While many ask “why won’t this vicious cycle of violence stop?”, most fail to realize the families of these victims or perpetrators have never received counseling after such traumatic experiences.
Though Bright Star Community Outreach has been serving community families for eight years now, the Bronzeville Dream Center project began with my trip to Israel. The BDC, inspired by NATAL in Israel, is dedicated to serving Chicago with counseling and other social services aimed at minimizing negative factors that cause violence and increasing protective influences that yield positive outcomes.
We endeavor to focus on five core competencies: Counseling, Parenting, Mentorship, Workforce Development and Advocacy. It's unique model will utilize faith leaders as post-trauma counselors and use community surveys as the basis for services that directly correspond to the unique needs of constituents. Its end-to-end approach offers a replicable, evidenced-based template for risk assessment and program evaluation. It is my hope that many people who have survived nightmares will begin to “dream again.” Although the BDC will sit in Bronzeville, it will serve Chicago!
I often tell people, “SAY Nothing, Until You DO Something About Chicago Violence!” So if you have been looking for a way to get involved and help…here it is: BrightStarChurchChicago.com.

TBTNEWS ALERT
IT'S "PUT UP" OR "SHUT UP" TIME ON VOTER REGISTRATION, VOTER EDUCATION AND TURNOUT FOR THE UPCOMING MARCH ELECTIONS! Voter Registration, Education and Turnout is KEY for March Primary! Everybody can call local high schools in their areas to schedule to be Deputy Registrars on Friday, January 15th. This is High School Voter Registration Day in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, and in recognition of the legislature passing and Governor Rauner signing the new law that re-institutes CIVICS in public schools. We especially want to engage our student leaders across the city to show that the 18-35 age group will not be the lowest in voter registration and voter turnout in the March elections. - Mark Allen

FORWARD THINKINGFinding Your Purpose
Special Correspondent: Allyson Scrutchens
Everyone starts the New Year with ideas, resolutions and opinions about how they want their year to go, and what mindset they will have in the coming year, but the reality is that none of it goes as planned. What does go as planned is the lessons, mistakes and accomplishments that we are meant to experience in order to prepare us for this thing called purpose.
Waking up every day as an entrepreneur is one of the toughest realities to swallow, but what gets me out of the bed is my purpose. I am here to serve, not only the Man Above, but also people like me trying to make it in this egotistical world. It has to be understood that our purpose here in life is to serve. I serve with my passion of helping others, knowing that my blessings and the money will come.
The process of finding your purpose is a self-driven one, rooted in faith and discipline. It is your personal journey of making your passion your paycheck, and becoming the one and only determining factor as to how successful your life will be. Once you tap into that inner self-reliant being and become in tune with what makes you happy, then everything else falls into place. Yes, just as cliché as it sounds, it does. You start to make those desired connections, attend the right events and create the perfect ideas.
I challenge you to start 2016 with identifying your purpose and the gift that you’re meant to bring to this world. You will know you’ve found it when things in the universe begin to shift in the favor of your calling.
Tap into the ambition that reminds you that fear is a liar and remember that the only real failures are those who never try. Once you find your purpose you must then stay true to it and the key elements that assist you with staying in alignment. Don’t ponder on the lows during this purpose journey, but make sure you celebrate every moment of glory to its fullest. This road won’t be a yellow brick one, but it can be as pretty as you paint it.
When I dare to be powerful – to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid. - Audre Lorde
