Blog Question

Now that Mayor Richard M. Daley has got his Walmart deal the way he wants it, do you REALLY want a Walmart in the Chatham Market? Leave your comments on the comment line.

Actually the residents of Chatham would be served better by having a Harrod's, Barney's of New York, Macy's, H & M, Lord & Taylor, Sports Authority, and Abercrombie & Fitch, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany's (all together) or even a Costco rather than a Walmart. Chatham deserves something upscale.

I agree with ifiworld. I'd prefer a meijer or costco. Have the alderman approached other stores? Lets have a forum and find out why these stores wont come here. Meijer is expanding all over the suburbs. Whats with these aldermen? Is Walmart the only store giving out kick backs? Who wants a ciy full of Walmarts? Will these messages be given to alderman Brookins?

Alderman Brookins has a deaf ear when it comes to what the 6th ward wants. he feels we are hurting his ward and his constituents by not supporting Walmart.

He states that he has talked to Costco and Whole Foods and he states both have said they are not interested. We have verified at the Sixth Ward Blog that Whole Foods is not interested but for different reasons than what Alderman Brookins states. Also, Alderman Brookins stated Costco stated they were not interested in opening any more stores in the city but yet they are planning to open a store at 14th Ashland.

Residents in Chatham do not have to depend on Alderman Brookins and his development. There is enough space at 77-79th South Chicago to Stony Island. This land is vacant because it was alleged to be the futute site of a Super K-mart. This was a development that was suppose to happen several years ago and the land is still vacant. It is large enough to accomodate a Costco or Meijers.

SOME of the residents might prefer the stores ifi mentioned. I sure don't shop there.

Myself and many others in the ocmmunity shop at Wal-Mart.

If "the community" really wants those other stores instead, i would love to see the petitions for a particular store.

Regarding Whole Foods...it seems like brookins is saying that Whole Foods thinks our community is too ignorant to actually shop at a Whole Foods (look at the lack of selection at the 87th street Jewel; my wife can't find the same diabetic bread found at other Jewel's; she knows many friends who choose to shop at another Jewel's).

Of course Whole Foods would give a different story. It would be politically incorrect to say that the black community doesn't care or spend enough on "their kind" of product.

As for Costco..the new stor eis close to downtown...a different economic class than what is perceived down here.

Oh...and the fact that many dollar stores seem to thrive here seems to indicate that such businesses are what the community wants.

If notm why haven't other "upscale" stores started and flourished here?

No Dollar stores have opened only because of the ordinance change that has taken away the Aldermans right to block a business. Years ago they would not have been allowed to open because they could have been legally blocked.

Secondly, I think you make a valid point about a poll to find out what is wanted. Great idea for the blog.

But, is it only me why do we not hear from the Chatham Business Association?

Seriously, let's have these in the Chatham Market and be done with it: Harrod's, Barney's of New York, Macy's, H & M, Lord & Taylor, Sports Authority, Abercrombie & Fitch, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany's and a Costco.

Even a Carson's and Bloomingdales would be a healthy improvement to the Chatham Market.
