Electronic signage, hand straps and aisle-facing seats on the CTA's 5000 Series Rail Cars, which began testing with commuters on the Red Line on Monday. New CTA rail cars featuring mostly center-facing seats to pack in more rush-hour commuters went into service this morning on the Red Line. These first 10 cars are part of an order for 406. About a dozen cars will be delivered monthly, with the full order scheduled for completion in 2013.They are replacing aging equipment prone to break down and expensive to maintain, according to CTA officials.Commuters should also find their rides smoother, the CTA says. Passengers also will see seven security cameras on board each train and electronic displays of upcoming stations and other travel information. The maximum capacity of each new car is 123 passengers, both seated and standing, some 20 to 30 more than can be accommodated on current equipment, according to the manufacturer, Bombadier Transportation.Aisles also ware wider, providing more room for passengers with luggage, backbacks, bicycles and strollers, according to the CTA.

One Man Killed, Two Boys Shot in Violence in Chatham
It was a night of exceptionally heavy violence and bloody 12 hours on a warm summer-like night in Chatham. There have been no arrests.

The first slaying in the grim tally came just before 6 p.m., Bernard Hatcher, 20, was shot multiple times in the 7800 block of South Maryland Avenue as he was walking down the street, Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said. Hatcher, of the 7800 block of South Eberhardt Avenue, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 7:03 p.m. according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
In the non-fatal shootings:
• Two more gang members, ages 17 and 16, were shot in the 300 block of East 85th Street. One was in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a thigh wound, the other in good condition at the same hospital with an arm wound. Police said a red pickup truck stopped at Nat King Cole Park where several people were playing basketball. Someone inside the truck shot at the players.
At about 7:30 p.m., authorities began receiving calls reporting gunfire at Nat King Cole Park at East 85Th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where multiple people were shot. Earlier reports indicated that several youths on bicycles with guns approached the basketball court.
Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the neck and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the right hip and calf. The 17-year-old was in critical condition, while the 16-year-old was in serious condition, Brundage said.
The two boys, purported gang members, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a Fire Department spokesman said.
• Yet another gang member, 22, was riding a bicycle in the 500 block of East 88th Street when he was shot in the thigh. He was in stable condition at Stroger. Police said he was uncooperative and did not want to report the injury.

Arrest in killing of Eddy Curry's ex-girlfriend, child
The Henry family was notified after midnight that Nova Henry's ex-boyfriend, a Chicago man, was in police custody and authorities intend to charge him with two counts of murder.
Chicago police confirmed that the man had been arrested and that murder charges were pending, but further details were not immediately available. The Tribune is not naming the man because he has not been charged.
Asst. Supt. James Jackson said police arrested the suspect early this morning but wouldn't say exactly when.
"We have somebody in custody at this time. Over the weekend there should be some movement (on the case)," Jackson said.
Nova Henry, 24, and daughter Ava were found shot to death in her South Loop townhouse on Jan. 24. A 3-year-old boy, Henry and Curry's child, also was in the apartment. He was discovered asleep on a chair, his hands and feet stained with blood.
According to court records, DNA tests confirmed Curry is the father of both children.
A day after the killings Chicago police detectives traveled to LaPorte County, Ind., to try to speak with Nova Henry's ex-boyfriend after tracing his cell phone to a hotel there. But sources said the interview wasn't fruitful. The man was charged by LaPorte County police with trespassing after he allegedly refused to leave the Comfort Inn in Michigan City, but he was released on bail.
According to court records, the ex-boyfriend appeared in court as a lawyer for Henry in a paternity suit as recently as September against Curry, who now plays for the New York Knicks.
In April 2007, Henry obtained an order of protection against him that prohibited him from having contact with her and her son after he was alleged to have threatened them, according to court documents.
The man was charged with domestic battery for allegedly trying to push Henry down the stairs and with phone harassment. The charge was eventually dismissed and the order of protection was dropped.
The man has also been arrested in other domestic batteries, according to court records.
A week before she was killed, Henry installed a Brinks home security system in her South Loop townhouse, a home she moved to just after Christmas to escape the ex-boyfriend, who she believed was stalking her.
Yolan Henry, the mother of Nova Henry, said she was glad the man was in police custody.
Henry said in a statement from the family that Noah Curry has been in her custody since Jan. 24 and that she has been concerned about the child's safety because he was in the apartment at the time of the killings. She said the Curry family has had security the entire time after the horrific tragedy, while she has had to depend on family members to protect Noah.
Since the murders, Noah hasn't been able to attend school or follow his daily routine, Henry said.
Henry said her family is thankful to the Chicago Police Department for their "tireless efforts."
