He was also issued a citation for going the wrong way on a one-way street, the release said.

About 9:15 p.m., uniformed Gresham District officers saw a motorist commit a traffic violation in the 8600 block of of South Drexel Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

One Man Killed, Two Boys Shot in Violence in Chatham

It was a night of exceptionally heavy violence and bloody 12 hours on a warm summer-like night in Chatham. There have been no arrests.85th_shooting_612.jpg

The first slaying in the grim tally came just before 6 p.m., Bernard Hatcher, 20, was shot multiple times in the 7800 block of South Maryland Avenue as he was walking down the street, Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said. Hatcher, of the 7800 block of South Eberhardt Avenue, was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 7:03 p.m. according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

In the non-fatal shootings:

• Two more gang members, ages 17 and 16, were shot in the 300 block of East 85th Street. One was in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a thigh wound, the other in good condition at the same hospital with an arm wound. Police said a red pickup truck stopped at Nat King Cole Park where several people were playing basketball. Someone inside the truck shot at the players.

At about 7:30 p.m., authorities began receiving calls reporting gunfire at Nat King Cole Park at East 85Th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, where multiple people were shot. Earlier reports indicated that several youths on bicycles with guns approached the basketball court.

Gresham District Lt. John Brundage said that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the neck and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the right hip and calf. The 17-year-old was in critical condition, while the 16-year-old was in serious condition, Brundage said.

The two boys, purported gang members, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a Fire Department spokesman said.

• Yet another gang member, 22, was riding a bicycle in the 500 block of East 88th Street when he was shot in the thigh. He was in stable condition at Stroger. Police said he was uncooperative and did not want to report the injury.

Blog Question: New Library Building

Do you want the new Whitney Young Branch of the Chicago Public Library to be a one-story or a 2-story facility? Leave your comments on the comment line.

New Library Meeting at Whitney Young Branch in Chatham

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, had the pleasure of attending the Facilities Committee Board of Directors meeting at the Whitney Young Branch of the Chicago Public Library (CPL) at 7901 South King Drive. Ms. Mary Dempsey, Commissioner of the Chicago Public Library System, presided over the meeting which was fully attended by members of the Chatham community. The new building project for the Whitney Young Branch was discussed thoroughly by the committee. Right now the final closing on the laundromat at the corner of 79Th & Vernon has not been finalized, so the parcel covering the area from 79Th Street to the alley and from Vernon Avenue to King Drive will be used as the foundation for the new building. Concern was raised about have the new library as a 2-story structure. Ms. Dempsey was adamant about have it as a one-story with an all-new prototype that looks like two stories but will cover more than 14,000 square feet (with a budget of $14,000,000.00) with enough room for a children's center and adult reference sections, and space for a parking lot, the library itself, and a reading garden and with an entrance facing King Drive. No demolition date as been set because the final lot under the laundromat as not yet been fully acquired by the Public Buildings Commission of Chicago, then by the City and then given to the Chicago Public Library. But because of safety and disposal problems with the former Tropical Chicken site, there may the demolition first of that site all the way up to the present library (since that is now CPL property) for the time being to address the unsightliness complaints of the residents nearby, including the broken-down garage and trash from an overturned dumpster in the rear of the former beauty supply store site. Top of the line and state of the art high technology facilities including 4G (4Th Generation) broadband and multiple access points for WI-FI and flat panel computers for children and adults will be offered in the new building. There will also be ample space for auditorium and artist presentations. The architect for the site will be selected by the Public Buildings Commission of Chicago by competitive bidding process. The contractor has not been chosen at this time. Once the Public Buildings Commission as decided on a final prototype, the Commissioner of the CPL will reach out to the Alderwoman of the 6Th Ward to call for public hearings on the architectural design for members of the community to discuss. Dates for such hearings have not yet been set. We strongly urge all of our residents, members, and viewers to write to the CPL Commissioner to express their views on having a 2-story structure at: Chicago Public Library Commissioner's Office, 10N, 400 S. State Street, Chicago, IL 60605.

Arrest in killing of Eddy Curry's ex-girlfriend, child

Chicago police have arrested a man they believe killed ex-Chicago Bulls player Eddy Curry's 10-month-old daughter, Ava, and her mother Nova Henry, who is also the mother of Curry's son.
The Henry family was notified after midnight that Nova Henry's ex-boyfriend, a Chicago man, was in police custody and authorities intend to charge him with two counts of murder.
Chicago police confirmed that the man had been arrested and that murder charges were pending, but further details were not immediately available. The Tribune is not naming the man because he has not been charged.
Asst. Supt. James Jackson said police arrested the suspect early this morning but wouldn't say exactly when.
"We have somebody in custody at this time. Over the weekend there should be some movement (on the case)," Jackson said.
Nova Henry, 24, and daughter Ava were found shot to death in her South Loop townhouse on Jan. 24. A 3-year-old boy, Henry and Curry's child, also was in the apartment. He was discovered asleep on a chair, his hands and feet stained with blood.
According to court records, DNA tests confirmed Curry is the father of both children.
A day after the killings Chicago police detectives traveled to LaPorte County, Ind., to try to speak with Nova Henry's ex-boyfriend after tracing his cell phone to a hotel there. But sources said the interview wasn't fruitful. The man was charged by LaPorte County police with trespassing after he allegedly refused to leave the Comfort Inn in Michigan City, but he was released on bail.
According to court records, the ex-boyfriend appeared in court as a lawyer for Henry in a paternity suit as recently as September against Curry, who now plays for the New York Knicks.
In April 2007, Henry obtained an order of protection against him that prohibited him from having contact with her and her son after he was alleged to have threatened them, according to court documents.
The man was charged with domestic battery for allegedly trying to push Henry down the stairs and with phone harassment. The charge was eventually dismissed and the order of protection was dropped.
The man has also been arrested in other domestic batteries, according to court records.
A week before she was killed, Henry installed a Brinks home security system in her South Loop townhouse, a home she moved to just after Christmas to escape the ex-boyfriend, who she believed was stalking her.
Yolan Henry, the mother of Nova Henry, said she was glad the man was in police custody.
Henry said in a statement from the family that Noah Curry has been in her custody since Jan. 24 and that she has been concerned about the child's safety because he was in the apartment at the time of the killings. She said the Curry family has had security the entire time after the horrific tragedy, while she has had to depend on family members to protect Noah.
Since the murders, Noah hasn't been able to attend school or follow his daily routine, Henry said.
Henry said her family is thankful to the Chicago Police Department for their "tireless efforts."

Sub-Area 1 Meeting Update

The hotel development was proposed for the vacant lot area near the Mobil gas station in the 7700 South State block. The meeting was well attended. There will be several more meetings on this topic upcoming for Sub-Area I.
