Religious Institutions



IS YOUR NON-PROFIT READY TO MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE WATER FEE EXEMPTION?

To qualify for the Water Fee Exemption, religious institutions and NFPs must:



provide your institution’s net assets or fund balances at the end of the tax year or calendar year

immediately preceding the calendar year in which the exemption from payment of water service charge is

being claimed

* (excluding land and/or property values);

adopt a water conservation plan;

perform within the corporate limits of the city, charitable services that benefit the public and is a

Non-Profit corporation within the State of Illinois, listed in "good standing"; and



all water accounts must be controlled by a meter.

On May 8, 2013, the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance to reinstate the water fee exemption for not-for-profits (NFPs) and religious institutions who meet certain criteria. See the list below for items to qualify for the Water Fee Exemption. The City of Chicago is expected to send out the new water fee exemption applications in late November/2013 or early December/2013. Your organizations will have (45) days from the date of the notice to apply for the water fee exemption.

$0 < $1 million → 100% water fee exemption



$1 million < $10 million → 60% water fee exemption

$10 million < $250 million → 25% water fee exemption



$250 million or more → 0% water fee exemption
