There a a few spots
remaining for the Bottom's Up for OPEN SPACE Trolley Tour this
Friday!
Please join us as we
lead a lakefront happy hour trolley tour to give Chicagoans a front-row view of
our City's public open spaces along the lakefront that would be impacted by
pending development proposals including the Lucas Museum. Stops along the tour
will include DuSable Park, Soldier Field South Parking Lots (the proposed site
of the Lucas Museum), Grant Park, Northerly Island, 31th Street Harbor and a few
others! Join us and help shape the future of Chicago's lakefront public open
space.
Read the recent Sun Times article highlighting significant environmental
contamination documented at the proposed lakefront site for the Lucas Museum,
where, "embankments, parking lots and other paved surfaces around the stadium
serve as barriers eliminating human exposure to the buried pollutants." Join the
discussion on potential public costs, environmental impacts, the Lakefront
Protection Ordinance, traffic congestion and many additional unanswered
questions raised by the museum's potential siting on this lakefront public open
space
Friends
of the Parks' supports the building and expansion of museums, attractions,
schools, senior housing and other institutions in the City of Chicago. However,
it is a troubling trend that these facilities are increasingly proposed within
our valuable parks and public open spaces. Given the established health,
recreation and quality of life benefits associated with natural and open spaces,
Chicagoans need to work together to protect our parks and public open spaces
from the pressures of development. Chicago, ranking 14th among a total of 18
large U.S. cities when measuring public open space per resident, lacks
sufficient parks and open space for residents and visitors. Further, there are
many alternative development sites which would serve to catalyze broader
economic impact in neighborhoods throughout the City.
While
informative we promise this tour will also be fun thanks to our friends at
Coors. There will be plenty of cold beer to enjoy on the trolley and a happy
hour party after to celebrate OPEN SPACE!
