Energy Impact Illinois

ABOUT ENERGY IMPACT

ILLINOIS

Energy Impact Illinois is an alliance of local government organizations, utility companies and non-profit groups formed with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Neighborhood Program. Our goal is to help homeowners lower their energy bills and create more comfortable homes by connecting homeowners with rebates and certified professionals who can conduct energy efficiency improvements.

For a limited time, homeowners can reduce their energy bills and receive up to $1,750 in instant rebates,

provided by Energy Impact Illinois and their local utility, for cost-effective and permanent energy efficiency improvements like air sealing and insulation.

SAVE MONEY

ON HOME ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROJECTS

Jason Rosado and Jennifer Chhatlani of Berwyn will save $772 annually, after reducing energy use by 37%.

With our unbeatable loans, you can make improvements now and repay gradually, using savings on your energy bill to offset the loan payments.

For a limited time, qualified borrowers can get the first year of interest paid for by Energy Impact Illinois, with a rate of no more than 8%. Many types of improvements qualify for the loan, call us for details.

GET A FREE ENERGY ASSESSMENT - HOST AN ENERGY HOUSE PARTY

Invite family and friends over, and a contractor will use your home to illustrate energy efficiency concepts and conduct a free assessment. Call us to learn more and schedule a Energy House Party.

AIR SEAL AND INSULATE

TO MAXIMIZE COMFORT

& SAVINGS

The two most impactful energy efficiency improvements are also the most permanent and cost-effective: properly air sealing and insulating a home. Over half of a home’s total energy costs come from heating and cooling, and these two simple improvements prevent outside air from penetrating and indoor air from escaping. Similarly, the warmest coats have a thick insulating layer to retain heat and a wind blocking layer to keep cold air out. You wouldn’t brave a cold winter day without a warm coat, and neither should your home.

Air is constantly leaking into and out of your home in summer and winter. Air sealing and insulation solve this problem.

PLEASE READ TIME SENSITIVE - ENERGY IMPACT ILLINOIS PROGRAM ENDING SOON

President Obama acknowledged something must be done about climate change in his speech yesterday. Whether we
think his proposals go far enough or not this project offers an opportunity to make a small difference in
the problems that the heating and cooling of buildings contributes to the climate change issues so please
read the rest of the email and review the attachments. Please pass this on to your networks regardless of
where they may live in the City.

After 10 months of working on the Energy Impact Illinois program as the Regional Lead Organizer for the
south side of Chicago I am sending you this email to ask that you participate in Campaign 200:

Campaign 200 is the south side Energy Impact Illinois teams’ vision for adding 200 more energy audits and
retrofits during the next 6 weeks as the program comes to an end. Officially the program ends on September
30th; however because the projects has been funded by the US Department of Energy government rules prevent
any more work or transactions to occur after that date. So effectively to make it possible for the deadline
to be met all audits and work will be scheduled and if the home or building owner decides to do the retrofit
all audits will be scheduled and completed by August 15th with air sealing and insulation retrofits being
scheduled and completed so that all transactions are completed before the deadline.

Energy Impact Illinois is a whole home energy efficiency program that offers rebates, low cost energy audit
and special low interest loans for single family homeowners and owners of 2-4 unit buildings. There are no
income restrictions or requirements that the building owners occupy the building.

To take the first step towards energy efficiency and savings, sign-up for a $99 assessment ($99/unit if a 2-
4 building) by contacting Orrin Williams at 773.597.8155 or orrin@energyimpactillinois.org.

For a free assessment host a neighborhood house party, inviting in 5-10 other homeowners to see your
assessment and learn about the program.

Additional low cost options for homeowners include:

· CNT Energy’s Small Multifamily program which offers free assessments and a proactive energy adviser for
owners of 2-4 unit buildings in middle to low income communities.

· The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association’s EnergySavers bungalow program which will completely cover the
cost of energy efficient air sealing and insulation work for low income historic Chicago bungalow owners.
Middle income homeowners will qualify but will be asked to contribute $300 to the work performed on their
home.

For more information on any of these programs please contact Orrin Williams at 773.597.8155 or
orrin@energyimpactillinois.org

Finally! We need your help! Besides asking you to send this email through your network we are asking for
volunteers for the next training session; stay tuned for the date. This is a critical piece of the program
as many of the staff will not be working beyond August 2nd. Volunteers are needed to promote the program
through presentations at house parties and community meetings through the end of the program. PLEASE, PLEASE
consider joining our team as a volunteer and attend the training session! Call Orrin Williams at
773.597.8155 to RSVP.

Time is of the essence!

Governor Quinn Encourages Chicago Area Church Youth Groups to Attend Free Camping

Governor Quinn Encourages Chicago Area Youth Groups to Attend Free Camping Adventure
"Under Illinois Skies" Includes Outdoor Activities at
Kankakee River State Park on June 28-29

CHICAGO - Governor Quinn and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) invites Chicago area church youth groups to register for a free summer camping adventure - "Under Illinois Skies" - at Kankakee River State Park on June 28-29. The event is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to ensure that no child is left inside and is designed to expand outdoor recreation across Illinois.

"June is 'Leave No Child Inside' month and we want to make sure the children in Illinois have every opportunity to get outside and get moving," Governor Quinn said. "'Under Illinois Skies' is a great adventure that will introduce campers to nature while enjoying outdoor fun in one of our great state parks."

The IDNR has partnered with the Chicago Retail Merchants Association to sponsor a full day of outdoor activities and overnight camping on Friday, June 28, and a Saturday morning camp breakfast on June 29 at Kankakee River State Park near Bourbonnais.

"Under Illinois Skies" is a pilot project through the IDNR that provides urban youth with opportunities to experience outdoors activities including fishing, hiking, and camping at an Illinois state park. The camping trip is among a number of events throughout June that are part of Governor Quinn's "Leave No Child Inside" initiative to provide more outdoor recreation opportunities for Illinois' youth, especially children in urban areas of the state.

Church youth group leaders interested in registering for the free June 28-29 "Under Illinois Skies" activities at Kankakee River State Park should contact IDNR Community Outreach Director Jeffrey Jones at 312-590-5094 , email Jeffrey.R.Jones@Illinois.gov Jeffrey.R.Jones@Illinois.gov

Izola's Replaced by New Soul Food Restaurant

Luversia's Restaurant Opens in Chatham
CHATHAM — Brothers Anthony and Michael Cherry opened a soul food restaurant Saturday in the former home of the legendary Izola's.
Occupying 20,000 square feet at 522 E. 79th St. is Luversia's, a family restaurant that Anthony Cherry said was named after his late mother, Luversia Faye-Cherry, who died in 2008.
"She was a good person who taught us a lot about life," recalled Anthony Cherry, who grew up in Englewood but now lives in South Shore. "Five years from now I want to expand the restaurant to have a location on the West Side, North Side and downtown. I know those are ambitious goals, but I am an ambitious person."
Izola's, named after Izola White, opened in 1940 and closed in 2011. Luversia's has continued in part to use the former restaurant's identity by offering an "Izola's Ole-Skool Burger" for $6.99.
Prices for other items at the non-alcoholic eatery range from $5.99 to $12.99, and the menu includes catfish, fried chicken, burgers, pork chops, turkey, smothered fried steak, greens, mashed potatoes, peach cobbler and more.
Having previously owned three restaurants, Anthony Cherry said cooking is what he loves.
"I had owned The People's Choice at 80th and Ashland [Avenue] in 1996; Pisces Sea Food also at 80th and Ashland from 1999-2004; and the New Dating Game Cafe [inside the New Dating Game Lounge] at 89th and Stony [Island Avenue]," he said.
Luversia's, which accepts credit cards and has carry out available, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and remains open until 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Twenty employees have been hired so far, mostly residents of Chatham and Grand Crossing, Anthony Cherry said. His son, Tyree Cherry, 21, also works at the restaurant as a bus boy.
"And we are looking to hire a few more people as we speak," Anthony said.
First-time customers gave the service and food two thumbs up.
"The catfish was moist, not greasy and the cabbage was fabulous," said Yvette McDonald, who has lived in Chatham since 1976 and is now a retired information technology specialist. "And I don't eat everybody's cabbage, but I'll eat this cabbage."
McDonald, who is single, admits to eating out every week and was a regular customer at Izola's.
"She had some good food. From what I can tell the atmosphere here seems good and the food is worth coming back for," she said. "There are not many [sit-down] restaurants in Chatham left. Hopefully this place will stick around because I like supporting local businesses, especially black-owned businesses."
McAllister and Crystal Darnell drove from their homes in the South Chicago neighborhood to eat lunch at Luversia's on Monday.
"A friend of mine told me about this place and said the food was good, so I decided to try it out," McAllister said. "And she was right. The food is really good. I would definitely recommend it to my friends."
Darnell attended Saturday's grand opening.
"The food was good then and it's good now," said Darnell as she chowed down on a burger and fries. "Man, I can hardly finish my food. That's how you know it is good. When you are stuffed and can't eat anymore, you know it's good."

X Mark on Buildings in the 6th Ward

X

Marks the Spot?

Explaining the Red “X” that has been appearing on abandoned buildings.

Residents have been concerned about the Red “X”’s that have been appearing on vacant homes around the city.  No one was certain of what the x’s meant, and there were questions as to whether the 6th Ward would become filled with vacant lots from an aggressive demolition program.  In fact, the X is a sign from the Department of Buildings to let first responders know that a building is vacant.  The X has nothing to do with a building‘s status in demolition court.  Alderman Sawyer does not support mass demolitions of buildings that can be saved, and he is working with interested parties to get homes back on the market.
