ALDERMAN RODERICK T. SAWYER RELEASES STATEMENT ON COUNCIL BUDGET OFFICE

Upon the Announcement of Mayoral support for the Independent Budget Office for the Chicago City Council, Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer (6^th) released the following statement:

While I applaud the announcement of Mayoral support for a council budget office, it serves as only one part of creating a sustainable budget system that protects all of the citizens of Chicago. A budget office is necessary to evaluate all aspects of upcoming budget and privatization proposals, but without a codified process- such as the one that would be established through my Privatization Transparency and Accountability Ordinance- there would be no venue available to consider the work and reports of this office.

Public hearings in the Committee on Budget and Government Operations, as mandated by the Privatization Ordinance, should be the venue where reports of the Council Budget Office as well as other experts are reviewed for consideration of future privatization deals. It is only through a full analysis of these initiatives can we expect the City Council to balance between short term savings on one part of the budget, without subjecting our communities to turmoil through the mass loss of employment and investment.

The triple downgrade of Chicago and the current situation in Detroit should serve as a call to action for those of us in the City Council. We must get our financial house in order; however plans that do not invest in our working people that live in every neighborhood of this city or invest in our children’s future are insufficient to the task at hand. To be clear, having a budget that balances on the suffering of our least fortunate is not a sustainable path forward for this nor any other American city. It will take a joint concerted effort to solve this problem, and for that the City Council needs the rules and the resources to be a full partner with the Administration. I hereby renew my call for a hearing on the Privatization Transparency and Accountability Ordinance.

National Night Out - Porch Light Festival is coming...

Grand Crossing Park Neighborhood Network

Dearest Neighbor,

The network National Night Out event (Porch Light Festival) is on National Night Out, Tuesday August 6th, 2013 in the 7300 block of Drexel - 7-10pm.

The grassroots renaissance will bloom again with this year's porch Light Festival. All participating Block, community and Neighborhood organizations are again invited to come out and show solidarity with their neighbors by joining in the conversation. Bring a lawn chair and sit yourself down where ever you'd like, stop by a participating neighbors house (designated by blue light) enjoy free refreshments and settle into some good discussion about bringing the neighborhood together for some long term improvements.

If you receive this email directly from the horse's mouth then that means you're invited. There are other National Night Out events that night, but this one's the "Real McCoy". Come on out and join us after you've visited the others, or join us for the whole thing. Residents start arriving at 6pm

The Latest on Walmart: Organizing Workers Right Here in Chicago (with your help)!

Dear Jobs with Justice Ally,

This summer, activists and organizations in cities across America are joining the front lines of the struggle to Change Walmart, and we want you to get involved!

Throughout the country, thousands of Walmart associates are making change at the world’s largest employer by organizing for respect on the job, taking their message to shareholder meetings, and orchestrating nationwide strikes and walkouts. In response, Walmart has fired, disciplined, and otherwise retaliated against workers here in Chicago and nationwide.

From San Francisco to Manhattan and here in Chicago, Jobs with Justice is working with labor, community and faith groups to form Change Walmart teams of 3-7 volunteers ready to ‘adopt’ a Walmart store in their area. These teams will visit the Walmart store on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to talk to workers about problems they have on the job, and to mobilize them to join their colleagues in the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart).

OUR Walmart is a national organization of Walmart workers who fight for workers' rights on the job. This summer, OUR Walmart is building its capacity and power among workers to prepare for two upcoming national days of action, when we hope to significantly escalate the struggle to Change Walmart. It is essential to involve communities in this effort, and that's where you come in!

If you, or members of an organization in which you are involved, are interested in forming a Change Walmart team and adopting a store, we would like to invite you to attend a Jobs with Justice training session. At a training session, you will learn the nuts and bolts of talking to workers, and your team will be connected to the developing nationwide campaign. We are holding these trainings at our office in Chicago in early August, but we would be happy to bring a ‘portable training’ to you and your organization as well.
