Bring it Back: The Collection Box at 79th Street and Rhodes Avenue

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel the U.S. Postal Service should bring back the collection box at the southeast corner of ,79th Street and Rhodes Avenue for the sole sake of senior citizens who now must walk one extra block or two just to get to a mail box. We urge the Post Office to bring the collection box at this intersection, ASAP!

Community Action Problem Solving Training Forum

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, were in attendance at the Community Action Problem Solving Training Forum (CAPS) for the 6Th District Police at Saint Dorthy Catholic Church, 450 East 78Th Street, with a discussion on how Chathamites, particularly the senior citizens, can do to protect themselves against the crime wave onslaught, involving the use of high-technology, specifically surveillance cameras and motion detectors placed on and around the exterior of your home or apartment building. The Forum, sponsored by Father Robert Miller, pastor of St. Dorothy's, included speakers from the Chicago Police Department, CAPS Implementation Office, Keepin It Real, Cook County State's Attorney Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Offenders and ex-offenders related their life stories of perpetration, urging that hi-tech defense is the best offense against crime.

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, urge all of our residents to be keenly aware that the Olympic bid for the 2016 Summer Games may be successful, thus creating perhaps the greatest real estate speculation bonanza for Chatham that perhaps the world has ever seen! Beware of scam artists and con men out to seek your property for outrageous terms. Get a good real estate attorney trained in the law with experience to protect your interests. This goes doubly for the elderly! Don't be a victim. The crooks want your house! The International Olympic Committee will begin a final hearing of the Chicago bid at 1;45 a.m. local time on October 2ND, to be broadcast on all Chicagoland outlets on broadcast, cable and satellite television and radio. Watch yourself!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, want to remind everyone that we will accept nothing less: a Bucktown Wicker Park replica for the newly constructed Whitney Young Library at 7901 South King Drive! So let's make sure it comes to be!

In the Right Direction!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, feel the new Auto Zone in the 8100 block of Cottage Grove between 81st and 82ND Streets is a move in the right direction in rebuilding the commercial retail base of the neighborhood (it was once a vacant lot for years!). Let's see much more of that in the event Chicago wins the 2016 Summer Olympic Games!

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, wish to thank the City of Chicago Department of Transportation for finally after four years putting in a bike rack at 79Th & Rhodes Avenue intersection! We think the City of Chicago Bureau of Signs and Markings, Department of Transportation should install all-new bike racks, restore bike paths, and create dedicated painted bike lanes on 79Th Street between State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue and on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive between 75Th Street and 87Th Street in both directions to accommodate the ever increasing bike and motorcycle traffic the Chatham community is experiencing in the summertime!
