One of a kind opportunity on the South Side of Chicago...

TheYouth Conservation Conference (YCC) primary mission is to expose youth to the world of Environmental Science through quality conservation class room and field experiences. Environmental Science covers a broad area of issues such as conservation, climate change, bio diversity, water quality, soil contamination, ground water contamination, use of natural resources, water & air quality, green space, sustainable development and the list goes on.
Students participate in an intense 4 week conservation internship; 2 week Conservation "Boot Camp" & 2 week paid Internship.

The students gain an understanding of what conservation is and why it is so important. The YCC provides a continuous professional environment in which youth learn science techniques, land management, team work and leadership skills.

These skills are necessary to identify, reclaim and protect precious and limited urban recreational waters, wetlands, and parklands.

Students that successfully complete the "Boot Camp" portion of the program earn the life long designation of "YCC Ambassador." In addition, YCC Ambassadors earn a 2 week follow up training internship and a monetary stipend award of $640.00. More importantly, YCC Ambassadors receive a portfolio of certified college endorsement letters from Supervisors and Managers of the Sponsoring Environmental Agencies; The Forest Preserve District of Cook County, US Fish & Wildlife Service, IL Department of Natural Resources, IL Conservation Foundation, Chicago Wilderness and the Field Museum.
The Program is for High School Juniors & Seniors and Starts June 17, 2013 and runs through July 15, 2013.
Students are required to meet Mon-Fri 8am - 4pm at the Fishin' Buddies Headquarters: 9946 South Halsted, Chicago, IL 60628 (Some Saturday Sessions will be necessary to complete this program) May 25th is the Application Deadline....

Paid Summer Journalism Program for CPS HS Students

Dear Teachers, Counselors, Principals and Friends of Columbia Links:

We are recruiting for the Columbia Links Summer 2013 high school journalism academy and seeking student applicants from grades 9 to 12.

Columbia Links is a skills-building and news literacy development program for youth and teachers in Chicago Public Schools and Chicago-area schools, housed at Columbia College Chicago. Through workshops, mentoring and the creation of youth-produced media, Links works to build expertise, advance news literacy and develop opportunities that connect students, teachers, parents and volunteers through journalism.

This summer session begins July 9, 2013 and runs for six weeks, three days a week, from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Thursdays.

Students receive a pay rate of $50 a week and bus cards each week to get to and from the college.

The classroom is turned into a teaching and working newsroom. Students will have access to computers, Flip videos, recorders and digital cameras. Students are also paired with a mentor who is professional journalist or a journalism graduate student.

The only qualification for the reporting academies is that the students attend a CPS school, Chicago-area school or alternative school, commit to doing the work and attend the workshops and mentoring sessions. Students must apply online at http://www.columbialinks.org/; see the link to the Summer 2013 program application on the left-hand side or at the APPLY HERE in the top bar.

The deadline for applying is May 31, 2013.

Here is a video featuring one of our high school students promoting the program.

Feel free to call or e-mail Brenda Butler (see contact info below) with questions.

Sincerely,

Brenda Butler

Help stop the handouts for big corporations

Staci,
It seems like every week we hear more threats of budget cuts from the politicians in Springfield. But they can't seem to get their priorities straight: Instead of closing the loopholes that big corporations use to duck their fair share of taxes, the politicians push to cut the things that matter instead, like money for schools, care for the elderly and individuals with disabilities, health care and good jobs.

A bill pending in the Illinois General Assembly would close three of the worst loopholes, including those that reward big corporations for creating jobs in other states -- and even overseas! Eliminating these wasteful loopholes would save nearly half a billion dollars each year.

Tax loopholes for big corporations are wasteful and inefficient. If you want your tax dollars to support priorities like schools and public safety -- not Big Business profits and CEO pay -- take a moment to send a message to your legislators at CloseLoopholesNow.org.
Sincerely,
William McNary

Chicago: Summer Short-Term Teaching Positions

Good afternoon,
The Grow Your Own Teachers (GYO) program at Northeastern Illinois University is seeking educators who can assist undergraduate students in preparing for the TAP (Test of Academic Proficiency). A "passings core"" on the TAP or ACT+Writing is required of students desiring entry into NEIU's College of Education.
We are in need of people to prepare GYO candidates for the Language Arts, Reading and Writing portions of the TAP. Most of the GYO candidates are non-traditional students (older, working and/or with family responsibilities) of color.
Salary is $30-40/hour, depending on background and experience. The workshops are being offered in the evening during the week and all day (9-4) on Saturdays. Each module is six hours. They are scheduled to begin May 28 and will run through June 29. The weeknight workshops will be held at NEIU (5500 North St. Louis). The location of the Saturday workshops has not yet been determined. I've attached the schedule so you can see what type of time commitment is required.
Workshop teachers need to hold a bachelor's degree and have prior teaching experience in the subject area.

Textbook Funding May Be Available for Your School!

Yesterday's textbook funding action alert contained an error. The Senate textbook bill was mislabeled. The correct Senate bill number is SB 2152. We have corrected the web site and email message provided in the ICAN link, so please go ahead with using it to contact your legislators and urge their support: http://capwiz.com/ilcatholic/issues/alert/?alertid=62646601

The EASIEST WAY to participate is to click here to send a pre-written email or letter to your state senator and state representative.

EVERY SCHOOL: Please contact your State Representative and Senator and urge them to support funding in the budget for next fiscal year! Your school LAP can coordinate the outreach, be it through meeting, phone call or letter. You can identify your state Representative and Senator by clicking here.

(Or, click here to go to the Illinois General Assembly website and click on Legislator Lookup in the lower half of the page. Or call our office: 312-368-1066)

Please get as many school families and parishioners as possible to participate in this effort.

WE NEED YOU: Your support of this initiative is essential -- please be sure your lawmakers hear from you and your school community!
