How About This!

Would it be great to engage the youth of our Chatham community to become urban beekeepers, to set up commercial beehives on the rooftops of our storefronts and business and generate income for themselves with the sale of homegrown honey? The pollination of the vegetation in our state provides for the fruits and vegetables that are essential to our agriculture of our region in the Midwest. Plus urban gardens with compost from our garbage waste would also engage young minds of how entrepreneurship can have even modest beginnings to grow into sizable enterprises? Blog Question

What do you think about some of our Senators and Congressmen sending our young people to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq but want to keep detainees held in a prison in Western Illinois? Maybe they should go to Iraq and Afghanistan themselves and let the young people that are being killed and maimed should make all of the key decisions about the war. Special Note

Burials have resumed at scandal-ridden Burr Oak Cemetery.

Chatham History Brief

In 1889 after Chatham was annexed to Chicago as a part of the Village of Hyde Park and the Town of Lake, there was an influx of railroad workers for the Illinois Central Railroad seeking a good place to live, accessible to transit to the downtown area from the rural and small town vicinity--they were mainly, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian, Irish, Polish, and German immigrants... But change came in about 1950 with Marquette Road as the color line, with a growing migration of southern blacks, and so did the neighborhood. In the early 1950s, Blacks began to migrate further south into areas such as Chatham.

Candidate Forum Report

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, were pleased to attend a Candidate Forum at the New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church at 77Th and Cottage Grove Avenue on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Property taxes and the moratorium on the increase of them have ended this year. Jobs expected from the federal stimulus grants to the state did not materialize in the black community in Chicago. Candidates discussed the issues of the day in these areas for the upcoming campaigns for the February 2, 2010 Democratic primary.

Remembering Ben Wilson

We, at the Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, will like to all of our viewers, readers, residents and members to take a moment of your day to take time to reflect and remember one of our greatest talents of all time to come out of Chatham, Ben Wilson, the number one in the nation high school basketball player from Simeon Academy who was taken from us by violence 25 years ago this week. Our prayers then as today remain with his family. He was known to many of us as "Benjy" who grew up on the 7700 block of Eberhart. RIP, Benjy!
