Response to President Obama’s SOTU Speech

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

The country seems turned off and tuned out to the Congress, politics generally and the federal government in particular. The good news is the emerging grassroots movement exemplified by The Dreamers and the burgeoning campaign among low income workers around the nation, offering a clear challenge to the political gridlock, the inaction and non-work by Congress. Seeking to respond to this grassroots energy and to combat the frustration many people are feeling around the country, President Obama presented an optimistic tone, an uplifting message and a new plan of action to move America forward.
JOBS & UNEMPLOYMENT: The number one priority for the President and Congress must be jobs, public and/or private, getting this economy back on tract, growing it in a balanced fashion, which will create stronger consumer demand. While 8.2 million jobs have been created under his administration, unemployment in the U.S. remains at unacceptable levels, especially in African Americans and other minority communities. The President must continue to urge Congress to pass an extension of unemployment insurance for 1.5 million Americans – a number that is growing daily – and Food Stamps for those in need through no fault of their own.

ECONOMIC INEQUALITY: President Obama spoke directly of the need for jobs and the need to close the income inequality gap.

  • In the U. S., the wealthiest 1% grabbed 95% of the post-2009 economic growth and the bottom 90% became poorer.
  • According to a recent Oxfam study, the world’s 85 richest individuals have more wealth than half of the world’s population - i.e., 3.5 billion people.
  • And according to the Campaign for America’s Future, without a new economic revolution 7-out-of-10 Americans born into poverty are likely to remain there.

INCOME: Bolstered by a burgeoning nationwide grass roots movement of low income workers, President Obama announced an Executive Order requiring government contractors to raise the minimum wage from $7.25-to-$10.10 – potentially covering 2 million workers, including janitors at the National Zoo, cafeteria workers at the Smithsonian, and the men and women who sew uniforms for the military. The President must match his words with action by making sure in his order that these workers and other direct workers for the Federal Government are immediately paid at the higher rate.

The President announced that he’ll pressure Congress to pass the Harkin-Miller bill which would increase the Federal minimum wage nationally for all low wage workers to $10.10 and index it to inflation thereafter.

IMMIGRATION: President Obama expressed his vision of America, imploring Congress to take up immigration reform previously passed by the Senate. It should be done comprehensively, but if the same result can be achieved incrementally that’s progress. Immigration advocates remain frustrated at the high level of deportations taking place under this administration that continues to divide parents from their children. Immigrants who contribute so much to our economy and the moral fabric our nation deserve a pathway to citizenship.

VOTING RIGHTS: Republicans have launched an all-out attack on democracy and voting in state-after-state. That can only happen because of our states’ rights and local control voting system in 13,000 separate and unequal local election jurisdictions. The fundamental right-to-vote is not explicitly in the U.S. Constitution and President Obama should launch a crusade to put the right to vote in our Constitution. He promised to “fix” our broken system, but common sense “reforms” will not fix it. Only adding a constitutional right to vote like H.J. Res. 44 can do that.

GUN VIOLENCE: While gun violence continues to kill Americans and bring tragedy to families and communities, the President failed to even mention common sense gun laws. Congress should pass reasonable gun legislation in order to reduce violent killings in America, reiterating his prior theme that the families of gun violence deserve a vote – up or down – from Congress.

BIG VISION AND BOLD ACTION: Challenges for the President & Congress remain. The Holy Bible tells us that without vision the people perish. In my judgment, what was missing in the State of the Union Speech was a big vision and proposed bold action - a big vision and bold action of infrastructure investment to provide a foundation for private economic development; a big vision and a bold action plan for preserving our planet from negative climate change; a big vision and a bold plan to dramatically reform education for all of our children; and a big vision and a bold plan to provide safe, sanitary and affordable housing for all Americans.

CONCLUSION: The President’s State of the Union Address reflected a positive attitude that tells us he still has faith in the American people; that he is willing to work in a bipartisan manner with all of the American peoples’ political representatives; and that he still believes that our democratic institutions can be responsive to the needs of the American people. It’s time to engage the disengaged; empower those disenfranchised; turn cynicism into hope and pain into power. That’s not a bad outcome for a State of the Union Address.

Jesse Jackson - State of the Union: It doesn't have to be this way

>
State of the Union: It doesn’t have to be this way
BY JESSE JACKSON
January 27, 2014

President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night will focus on inequality, on the reality that this economy does not work for working people. Given the obstruction of House and Senate Republicans, the president faces the reality that little of what he proposes can pass this Congress. He has vowed to use his “pen” and “phone” to act unilaterally where he can. But the real challenge is to explain to the American people what the reality is, what must be done and who is standing in the way.

Here are things we’d like to see in the presidential address.

It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way

Every great change president — Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, even Ronald Reagan on the right — uses what TR called his “pulpit” to rally Americans, to help them understand the challenge we face, and that it does not have to be this way. With the middle class sinking and the poor struggling simply to survive, most blame themselves for their predicament. Some adjust to the new reality, thinking this is just the way things are. Some start to believe the best years of the country are behind us, that their children will face tougher odds and fare worse than they did.

The first task of President Obama is to not only make clear what the reality is, but to make it clear that it doesn’t have to be this way. There are basic things that can and should be done that can make a major difference.

Make Clear Who’s Standing in the Way

The president will call for a long overdue hike in the minimum wage. He should challenge the Congress to act immediately to renew emergency benefits for the jobless that expired in February. He should demand action on comprehensive immigration reform that has already passed the Senate. He should call for a jobs corps for the young, putting them to work in installing energy retrofits in public buildings, in reviving our public parks, in serving impoverished infants and the elderly. And he should make it clear who stands in the way.

A minimum wage hike would pass the House tomorrow if allowed to come to a vote. House Speaker Boehner refuses to allow that vote. That is true about unemployment benefits and about comprehensive immigration reform as well. The president must help Americans understand who stands in the way.

But he should not stop there. Global corporations have squirreled nearly $2 trillion abroad to avoid paying taxes here at home. The private wealth of individuals secreted in nominally offshore tax havens is estimated credibly to total some $21 trillion.

We are not making investments vital to our future — in universal preschool and child nutrition, in high quality schools, in affordable college, in basic infrastructure from roads to airports to the electric grid vital to our economy. Most Americans struggle with wages that aren’t keeping up with costs and fear that more spending will lead to more taxes. But the president should make it clear. We can invest in our future if the rich and the multinationals pay their fair share of taxes. Billionaires should pay a higher tax rate than their secretaries. Huge multinationals should not pay a lower tax rate than small businesses. Obama should announce a range of executive initiatives to crack down on tax avoidance and challenge the Congress to join him in doing so.

Lift the Children

One in four American children is born into poverty. This “birth lottery” should not determine their fate. We must act to give every child the opportunity to learn, to fulfill his or her potential. This is a moral imperative — and an economic necessity. This country will not thrive unless the poorest children — disproportionately children of color — have the opportunity to develop.

President Obama has proposed a program to enlist the states in providing universal pre-K, one of the most cost effective investments that can be made in children. But he should go further than that. Detail what must be done in the early years — from conception to six-years-old — to ensure that every child comes to school ready to learn. Level with Americans how much this will cost. And detail where the money will come from — from ending wars abroad, from taking on special interests like the drug lobby that forces Medicare and Medicaid to pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs, from ending subsidies to big oil, from fair taxes described above. Challenge the better angels of the American people and they will respond.

We Are in This Together

The reality is that we all do better when we all do better. America’s economy worked best when the broad middle class was created, and we all — poor, middle class and rich — grew together. For the 30 years coming out of World War II, the economy grew faster, the middle class expanded, the poor did better — and the rich prospered. Over the last 30 years, however, only the few have benefitted, while income for working people lost ground. With growing inequality, the economy witnessed speculative booms and busts, with ever-harsher downturns and ever-slower recoveries. We cannot have a healthy and growing economy without rebuilding the middle class and lifting the impoverished.

President Obama will face entrenched and powerful resistance to whatever he proposes. Republicans have blocked all measures to create jobs, even as they blame the president for the bad economy. What is vital now is for the president to rise above this partisan strife — and to help Americans understand that it does not have to be this way.

Important meetings this week

"...What YOU can do for YOUR Neighborhood"
Dear Neighbor,
In the effort to reduce crime and violence in our sphere of influence, this week's CAPS meetings are of great importance to our 10 beat area. The weather forces our best soldiers to have to step to the forefront, for the less enduring will now be stricken from action.

In 2014 the CAPS schedule chops up vital meeting consistencies. Some beats meet more regular than others. Sector meetings will come into force and confuse many. Some beats won't have their first meetings until March. We must keep up a strong communication that things are improving.

These harsh winter days threaten to block out the important pre warm weather planning sessions so vital to getting the upper hand on the expected wave of violence come spring & summer. However it must be done now . We cannot afford any stall in the hard fought progress we have made in the last few years.

The meetings are;
CAPS beat 323 (Park Manor, Grand Crossing)
Tuesday Jan 28th
Park Manor Church
7:00pm

CAPS beat 624 (Park Manor-Chatham- Grand Crossing))
Wednesday Jan 29th
St. Dorothy's Catholic
450 E. 78th Street
6:30pm

Remember, the crusade is to build the important capacity needed to sustain the drive against this cursed violence. Our only way of succeeding is 'sustaining the drive'! In good weather... and bad, it must be done!

Hope to see you there
