New Recycling Bins for the 6th Ward Residents

We, at Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, have learned that the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation will provide new blue recycling bins for all residents in the 6Th Ward. Known as the City's Blue Cart Recycling Program, residents will have the opportunity to recycle material including paper, plastic and other approved items using a blue cart provided by the City of Chicago. This is how it works: In late November a blue recycling cart will be delivered in front of your property. Please wheel it next to your black cart where the Department of Streets and Sanitation will pick it up. Single-family homes will receive one blue cart, two and three flats will receive two blue carts and four flats will receive three blue carts. Blue carts will be delivered automatically, residents do not need to sign up for services. Beginning on December 1, Department of Streets and Sanitation crews will start collect your recyclables in a separate truck every other week. Deposit only recyclable materials in your blue cart. Recyclables do not need to be bagged or sorted. Place all remaining garbage in your black cart. Garbage will continue to be picked up weekly in a separate garbage truck. The recyclables collect from the blue carts will be delivered to a recycling center and ultimately turned into new products. The leaves and grass clippings will be transformed through a composting process in to a rich soil additive that can be used as natural fertilizer. Put these items in your blue cart for recycling: glass jars & bottles, aluminum cans, foil & pie tins, tin or steel cans, cereal boxes, paper towels rolls, etc., cardboard flatten all boxes plastic bottles & containers 1,2,3,4,5,7 (#6 not accepted), telephone books, magazines & catalogs, junk mail, paper bags, office paper & file folders, newspaper & inserts. Find your recycling pick-up schedule at bluecartschicago.org. Do not put these items in your blue cart bagged yard waste (collected April though November), garbage (not recyclable or yard waste material), household waste and electronics (take to a neighborhood event or to the permanent facility.), used batteries (Take them to any Chicago Public Library or Walgreen's store).
